  1. The CLA Gamefair has been cancelled for this year. This is hot on the heals of the news that they Honiton show has been postponed. The weather is costing lots of people lots of money this year.
  2. Here ye go: http://www.specialistauctions.com/auctiondetails.php?id=1560200 This one is being sold by pro-trapper off this site. Drop him a pm and see what he wants for it. It's also on ebay, but has been removed once, and will probably be removed again - fecking antis. You will need fairly deep pockets, as pole traps can make good money.
  3. Badgers are having a big impact on everything down here. 20 years ago, hedgehogs were common, and at some times of year you would see dozens dead on the roads. I've got no doubt that the start of the decline in species like the bumble bee was down to loss of habitat and over zelous farming practices; but things have changed now, and what's left of our hedgehogs and bumble bees are being seriously wiped out by the ever increasing number of badgers. Badgers, while not uncommon were rarely seen at night a couple of decades ago. The other day I saw 2 out foraging on the side of a road
  4. The decline in bumble bees has little to do with badgers. Nice pic Rofle, been a couple of years since i have found a nest dug up like that....... Got to disagree there Simon. The badger population here in the SW is so huge now that they are hoovering up everything in their wake. It's not unusual to see hungry badgers out in broad daylight looking for food, and whilst walking the mutts I've seen countless bumbles that have been dug out. While I'm sure the Varoa mite has taken it's toll of bumbles, the badgers around here are killing everything they can get to.
  5. Do you think that the thing that was bigger than your dog, had a curly coat and made a 'baah' noise could have been a sheep? I'm seriously concerned about the type of person this place attracts these days. Nike wearing lampers who don't know what a sheep looks like have no place in the british countryside, never mind on THL.
  6. Why does anyone need a gun to dispatch cage trapped squirrels?
  7. OK, firstly, you can't 'help out friends'. If they want to slaughter a sheep for their own consumption, then they need to do it themselves. As for the ideal weapon, a .22 isn't ideal; the skull of a sheep is thicker than a horse or a bullock, and I've seen .22 rimfire rounds bounce off more than once. To the person that suggested putting it behind the ear; that is illegal in the UK. If you speak to the HSA they have booklets with diagrams on shot placement. Ideally, you need to do a frontal shot with a shotgun, aiming to put the shot down the neck. From 6 inches to a foot away, th
  8. Yes it must be either stunned and then bled, or shot and then bled. A .410 is ideal for the job. Bang! and then get the knife in and the blood out. Ritual slaughter is only allowed in registered abattoirs otherwise we'd have livestock being killed in the streets like they do in France. Once dressed, you need somewhere fly free to hang it for a good few days to let the carcass firm up before you joint it. Anyone considering doing this should go to the HSA for advice.
  9. SRM is 'Specified Risk Material' - in other words, the brain and spinal cord.
  10. Yes it is legal, providing the meat is for the use of you and your direct family. Obviously cruelty laws need to be thought about, and if it's more than a year old (has cut teeth) then SRM comes in. Contact the Humane Slaughter Association for good information and advice.
  11. And I thought Whins posts were confusing................ Has nobody on this forum heard of spellchecker? And what happened to the No Txt Talk rule? Anyway, from what (I think) the OP is saying, someone has been running their dog(s) amongst horses. Bloody stupid thing to do. Sadly, some people still think that the whole of the hunting world is on THL.
  12. Yes, they do update them. Most technicians keep hold of them for future reference, so you are unlikely to find an up to date version easily.
  13. He's here, you just can't see him.............................
  14. You need to invest in an up to date BPCA manual. Anything secondhand is likely to be out of date, and as the legislation and best practice is changing constantly, you could find yourself in trouble with a secondhand manual. The RSPH exam questions are constantly being reviewed, and it's not uncommon for them to slip a few questions in about the changes just to catch people out. If it's not a stupid question, why can't you buy a new one?
  15. No, they are not legal to use. The law is clear - only those traps that are listed on the Spring Trap Approval Order can be legally used in the UK. There is a little confusion about the reference to 'clones', but to be considered a clone under the act they have to be the same dimensions, and the same quality. These far eastern copies are not. No they don't. They are underpowered and fall apart in a short space of time. Avoid, avoid, avoid. Remember the old saying; buy cheap, buy twice. They may cost a little more, but genuine Fenn traps are still made in England
  16. Ferreting at this time of year boys Not that unusual. Rabbits are a pest, and as such have to be controlled all year round in some areas. I was catching young in december last year, so the old 'R' in the month theory is long gone. The biggest issue with summer ferreting is the undergrowth. Good luck to whoever does it.
  17. The chains are always a giveaway...... Report them to Trading Standards. They have history. I hate rip off merchants like this who try and pass crud off as the real thing.
  18. You shouldn't be snaring any where near cattle - they have a nasty habbit of chewing snares, and snares kill them.
  19. Micky, while I understand what you are saying you are taking this too far. Your post didn't make it clear that you didn't set the snares for foxes, nor did your reply when asked. I didn't read it the way that some did; but perhaps there is a lesson to be learnt in that some people aren't as good as others at putting their thoughts into words and that some people only see what they want to see. All of this 'you called me this' and so on just makes us all look like thin skinned kids. Anyway, as for the original topic I don't think that we should hide the fact that accidents can a
  20. Got to agree Moley. The whole thing seems to have been blown out of proportion, and the thread is going off topic now with folks posting about feral cats (oh no, not again...) and someone posting that it's wrong to snare while rabbits are 'out of season'. What is this place coming to? Time for a padlock on this one moderators.
  21. That's sad Foxfan. This section of the forum used to be free of all the knuckle draggers that seem to inhabit forums all over the net. There used to be a few professionals on here mixed in with a few highly skilled hobbists. Posts were interesting and informative and there didn't seem to be any of the bitching that there is now. Ah well, I suppose everything changes as time goes on.
