  1. No, we didnt get the cat. They were our mousers but the pups always gave em hell. Our grown dogs wouldnt mess with a cat or else they took beaten of the week.
  2. Here are a bunch of pics of some old coonhounds we owned. All these pics are of good dogs. Probably owned 10x as many dogs as this but they were not the good ones. The first pic is of a 9 week old pup treeing a cat on the side of the tree in our yard.
  3. Just called the old man, he is gonna bring in some old photo albums.
  4. Ya, I got lots o pics of pure coonhounds. The crossbred ones were the ones we raced. There was first and second line and then also first and second tree which meant barkin up at the coon in a cage up in a tree once they were inside this circle around the tree.
  5. Yes sir, the right ones are for sure. As a boy growin up my daddy raised what we called field trial greyhounds. We raced them in a sort of over the river and through the woods type racing track where a scent track was layed. They basically greyhoundxcoonhound type dogs of various different percentages. Alot of the coonhound type dogs were not exactly game or gritty at all on critters but man once the greyhound was splashed into them, you turned them into very intense killers of all game.
  6. Nice job. Take care. Dog looks great.
  7. started my lurcher with basic walking to heal in the fields at 8 weeks just for a few minutes. im now at the point of 7 months and i havnt got the legs to walk him as much as he could probly go for so 4-5 hours a day i aim for more but this has been a very gradual process. i feed him chicken with a pacted dry food. dry food is down all day so its there when he needs it and he has a chicken carcass every morning. i dont do any as such obedience training as i see a dog at his best as natural as he can be as long hes walking to heel thats fine. im a true believer in almost rearing them like a wol
  8. you need both protein is one of the first to burn fat only gets burnt once all the other stores have been used. but most good foods should be 25-28% protein and 12-18% oil. but your right oil is just as important as once all the protein stores are gone it feeds on the fats rather than your dogs body mass. but if you dont run your dog enough on these high protein and fat diets you'l have one fat dog so no good for off season dogs ive got 24% protein pascoes gold. but a dog like a human uses fat first then protein as a last resort its called hitting the wall because it takes longer to break
  9. you need more fat then protein sorry but whats balls thats like asking an althelte do yea want this glass off fat or portein only think fat is for is bitches in pup and pups them selfs a working dog needs portein and lots off it not fat I think you better do a little research before you go tellin me what I know and dont know.
  10. I wish they made a great dog food that was a 24/30. You need more fat in a workin dogs diet than protein in my opinion.
  11. not to sure on this but isnt it common in america to run deerhounds and then for the power you use xs like great dane/pitbull/greyhound x great dane/greyhounds or mastiff/great dane x deerhound 7 years ago when visiting my uncle in texas they were using these types of dogs. now he lives by winipeg in canada as they could do all types of work really big powerfull animals totally different to our dogs. could take deer. boar fox anything that could move. so how do you think a whip/grey could improve on your sport when you already have the deerhound for pace and then your big powerful breeds which
  12. whipxgrey Thanks for your offer partner. I imagine they would be fun to fool with. The problem is that I need dogs that are 90 pounds or so and gyps around 75 pounds or so but thank you very much anyhow. ,,,,,AS I KNOW AMERCAN,S ARE INTO PED,S,,,,, I'm sure some Americans are into peds and such but most of us that actually hunt have never registered a dog in our lives. Take care.
  13. whip x grey You and I think alike in alot of ways. I do not see the need for any other blood in a sighthound. I like fast dogs that are superior athletes. I do admire some of the bull x and other type lurchers but overall I like my dogs to be able to catch stuff they shouldnt be able to catch and I want my blood to be boiling every time I watch em run.
  14. look at breed like german shepherds 20 years ago they were decent till all the inbreeding Inbreeding has nothing to do with that. It is the lack of use and the lack of men that are willing to load the gun and put a .22 in the brain housing group of any dog that is found wonting. That is the true problem right there.
  15. a well bred whippet/grey first cross would have the same or more stamina as a 3 quarter greyhound bred dog depending on wat cross.?? I would think that to be very true. I cant remember the fellas name that started this thread but anyhow, it would be a very rare 3/4 greyhound that would be fast enough to suit me. I like extremely fast dogs. I want them to be just a touch off of a greyhounds speed and to be honest I would prefer them to be able to run ever bit as fast as any greyhound in the world. I dont want them to be pussies and fragile like alot of these track bred
  16. mark my words 3/4 grey 1/4 collie crosses are fast enough to catch anythink in this country!!! tried and tested to the limit!!! nobody on this forum can truly doubt the 3/4 cross's lamping ability!!! You might be right but I'd say it's a 50/50 chance cause I'd almost bet that alot of em are not fast enough to suit alot of folks on here.
  17. They are mostly just greyhound but they probably have a bit of this or that in em too. Kinda like a deerhound cross but have been bred for years and years like this. Some folks over here call em staghounds.
  18. I too would much rather run a first cross whippet/greyhound than a first cross collie greyhound. In theory anyhow. But.............you give me a 7/8 greyhound 1/8 collie and I would chose that over a whippet/greyhound any day. I might would run a 3/4 bred if they were fast enough to catch something.
  19. There is no argument. Two great dogs bred together is better than two purebreds that are not great. If you have two great greyhounds and you want to breed them for hare dogs then so be it. If you have two great whippets and you wanna catch bunnies with em then so be it. Maybe a fella would like to have a dog that is damn good on the bunnies and pretty fair on the hare too so he crosses the two and sees what the good Lord lays out for him.
  20. If a fella had a great greyhound and a great wippet then I can not see why one wouldnt cross them.
  21. sorry but in response to your (in the my 51yrs and it is my opinion that there is no place for it in a working lurcher, the greyhound already has bull in its history, and it was kept to a small percentage for a reason,I realise the benefits it gave the breed, stamina, drive and aggression to name but a few.) wat planet have you been living on my friend 51 years old and your trying to say that the greyhound the purest of dog breeds and one of the oldest has bull in its heritage!! i have heard it all now get real my friend and do some history on dogs a good place to start would be a greyhound!! all
