  1. well done! spring bear isn't so good and takes alot of cooking but a fat fall bear often tastes like a juicier more tender elk (wapiti, american relative of red stag). also the lard rendered from a fall bear is said to make the finest pastry. Big bald beautiful 55# is how much weight it takes to pull the bow to full draw. depending on the exact weight of the arrow, it'll generate HUNDREDS of ft lbs of energy and due to the shapened blades & high sectional density will out penetrate .30 calibre rifles shooting less than 180grs or less than 2500 fps.
  2. if the ladder spaces were about 3" X 3" would a smaller version of this trap work for starlings?
  3. OTH she hates the word wanker. i like it i think it's spot on for some of the people i've used it about.
  4. yeah she didn't care for my use of the word but she still thinks it's cute when she does.
  5. we were watching Bravo Two Zero the other night. my darling wife who avoids foul language like a lesbian avoids bollocks, decided she liked the word and it doesn't count as a bad word because it's a British expression. it's cute because she giggles when she says it. i just have to laugh.

    starlings?

what do you do w/ them after? how do they taste?
  7. they are an introduced pest here and fair game. what is their status there?
  8. most any dog w/a descent nose will do. how do you plan to work the dog. on leash or free cast? if on leash you need a dog that takes obedience training well. if free cast it needs to be able to handle itself if the deer is only wounded and fights back. ETA most leashed dogs in the states are teckels & labs w/ a scattering of beagles, curs and scenthounds. most free cast are curs, beagles & deer bred foxhounds
  9. so why are they called pikeys? do they get offended at the term? what is the story behind the bit about involving a dog in every deal? are they really as dangerous as the movie made them out to be?
  10. i run on golf courses. my fave isn't remotely flat. so i don't really understand. i think my dog must be okay w/ it since he's only ever run w/ hills & ditches and dense scrub. honestly i'm afraid to try my dog on the crop fields here as they all have drainage ditches (2' across by 3' deep). the deer know they are there but i'm scared the dog would hit it and shatter his whole body. and until you're right up on it they look like lines of grass & brush.
  11. Dan most greys are 90-120 just like most guys in the USA are 5'8"-6'. wolves from 120-150 are like guys 6'2-6'6 everyone has seen or knows them but they still get a little more attention because they are a little bigger than average. wolves 150+ are like guys 7' tall they are freaking rare and everyone has to stare. just some perspective.
  12. a wolf is not a wolf. there are different types. coyotes when you skin them look an aweful lot like a large whippet or small grey but w/ a heavier head. basically the concept is it takes a really good sighthound to catch a really good sighthound. i've been told, if the foxhounds pile on at once & stretch the yote quick, they don't take much stick. ETA their are wolfers using pit & pitcrosses as den dogs on coyote. basically some USDA & private individuals send these 25-35# terriers into a hole w/ 1 or 2 adult 25-40# coyotes and their litter and they kill everything in the hole. th
  13. more like jui jitsu they'll lay on their back when the dog gets too close and light it up w/ all four sets of claws & teeth.
  14. 20# coon has given my salukiXgrey the hardest fight of everything he's caught (this includes a doe deer alone & boar w/ other dogs) that being said, I agree w/ Kye, a pit bull terrier isn't going to bring anything special to the table for killing coons. even crossing isn't necessary. about the only earth work here i'd seriously want a pit or pitX for is denning coyotes & maybe bobcats. everything else can be handled by good examples of working terrier breeds.
  15. Carlton he is salukiXgrey and linebred
  16. tyla they aren't much as fighters, i don't know how they stack up to reds as he hasn't caught one yet. sonic has killed a few coons & several feral cats. i don't like to let him on a possum because their bites get septic immediately. i hate skunks but he has a habit of catching them right before he has to be somewhere (like the night before i had to take him to my daughter's school for show & tell).
  17. 100 yd run up. this one was cleaning up the gene pool, it didn't even try to run until Sonic was 15 yds away. game was taken in accordance w/ local laws of North Carolina.
  18. i don't mean his lack of aggression when i say he's soft. i mean it only takes a stern word and he looks totally heart broken. just a very soft & submissive personality but death on coons & kitties and whatever else he catches.
  19. he is linebred mix of saluki & grey
  20. if you drop the dsc number and go to my photobucket account you can see his first fox & another smaller coon
  21. Adam coons were one of the reasons people imported real terriers from over there. the only working baddys i know of (thanks to a fella here) are in North Carolina just a few hours drive from me. also within relatively close reach are good patterdales & borders. coon is a major game for them. ETA anyone coming by NC let me know and i'll be glad to have knowledgeable company running my boy. i need all the teaching i can get.
  22. this was #3 that he's killed. he's also sight treed about a dozen more. but i rarely carry a gun and even if i do i probably won't shoot anything. he's a lot tougher than he looks. in fact if you met him & didn't know he was a killing machine you'd likely never guess because he's so soft.
  23. coons also carry distemper so i am damn picky about keeping him upto date on his shots and yeah it's a bit of fun especially when old rocky charges after you. good thing Sonic was fast enough to snatch him up again before i got the fangs.
  24. had several missed runs. then Sonic jumped the truck as i was stopping by work. 150 yd run. 20# boar coon. a tremendous fight (coon broke 2 teeth & split both of the dog's ears), it was so hard that when i skinned it the carcass looked like it had been pounded w/a claw hammer (the claw side).
