where in Mexico are you? you can pick up running dog pups in New Mexico, Arizona & parts of Texas & Oklahoma for a few hundred bucks. if that isn't an option in your shoes i'd get the leggiest blue or red heeler bitch i could find and put her under the galgo or saluki.

getting ready to move to Utah. was wondering if anyone was taking coyotes from their holes? if so, what are you using?

don't know much about lurchers & proper running dogs, but i had a pair of dobes in high school (damn that was a long time ago) that caught me whitetail deer after about 1-4 mile runs. if i knew then what i know now i'd have a good line of dogs. i say you won't know what you have until you try them.

Waidmann has a very good point. in most cases pit pups are raised w/ the baydogs & dog aggression is discouraged from an early age. if the dog is incurable he either goes to a friend to be a pet or takes the long walk. also the breed is so popular over here and a lot have been bred from cold dogs. honestly the worst fights i've seen have been between baydogs. the bulldogs usually grab & hold and so there is less damage when one gets into a fight in the truck. hotshots (electric cattle prods) go ALONG way to eliminating any desire to fight among the dogs.

and pitbulls arent bad with dog aggression? read the whole thread. he was replying to someone who said americans used EBT because pits were dog aggressive.

dogs jacking or cocking worst breeds for this
Pops replied to Thomsons dogs's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
is their anyway to get them back to giving it all they got. my dog is mediocre because it's my first sighthound & i'm pretty ignorant. i've also been damn lucky in the scenting dogs i've used before being too good. soi wouldn't consider myself a good trainer. now the problem is my dog is still 100% gives everything he's got on fox but has started jacking on deer. good chances on deer are few & far between here because of the heavy cover, but every once in a while i can catch them on the wrong side of a field. but the dog has started pulling up even if he should have it to rights. -
i can count on one hand the number of guys here that use EBT. in all cases the dog just sort of fell into their lap & they decided to give it a go. fortunately they did the job well enough. but most folks use pits because they are cheap not because they are best. really most dogs of bullbreed will try to do the job. i can go to the pound/shelter and for $200 or less pick up 3-5 generic "pits" and put them on a hog the same day. at least 1 will do the job good & at least two will be okay as long as they aren't catching alone. not to mention i can look on the net or in the paper & fi

Mickey Finn i've had some success calling grey fox into the open for my salukiX. try using round bales & brush patches in hay fields or between crop fields.

maybe we should ship y'all some coyotes & feral pigs so y'all will have something to hunt them on

the fellas who do what you folks call deer stalking don't like doggers much unless they are one. they think dogs running a bear, boar or cat makes the deer run to the next state. the reality is that even where we run foxhounds on them they just run a big circle and come back to within a few hundred yard of where they were and go right back to their habits. if the dogs are just running through chasing something else they may not even move but just sit there listening to the run. but you can't explain that to the guys who think there is some great deed in putting a rifle bullet through bambi's b

different dogs for different game but some crossover. scent hounds, curs, some terriers & their crosses are used for most game. the majority of guys using longdogs are out west w/ one or two scattered around east of the mississippi river (unofficial dividing line between east & west in the USA). i got mine from a lady in georgia who bred one of her bitches back to it's grand sire in illinois. two of his littermates went to a fella in south carolina who has used them to catch deer, boar & bobcat flushed by his curdogs. dogs can only be used for deer LEGALLY in parts of the southe

look for wallows & nearby rub trees. when looking to draw them to a shooting spot, sour some corn (maize) put it in a puddle. deer & other things will eat it if left out but in a puddle only hogs will eat it. also take a burlap bag and soak in diesel or used motor oil, then wrap it around a rub tree or post & nail it on w/ fence staples. both will bring them around more often. night shooting w/a filtered light will be most productive. try to only shoot singles this way or you will educate the others & they'll get lamp shy. or use some sort of softer dog to find & bay (bail)

Dan the wife is going to be dragging me to the Quad cities area for thanksgiving. you know anyone in the area that'll let me throw an out of shape shag in on their coyote runs? (i'm not kidding he is so out of shape between the kids, the Corps & the damn rain we've had about 2 hours of pointless hunting)

Dan HAPPY BIRTHDAY brother, i know it's a day late but there it is. Doc great shots. Aaron nice shots there too. Unfit by your criteria of access to food & water, even box/cage traps are cruel. so is that what you think? if so then it negates your position as it places you in the anti position that all trapping is cruel. further your contention doesn't fit the generally agreed definition of cruel, the wanton & unnecessary infliction of pain & sufferring. the use of these traps is neither wanton nor unneccesary. anyone who has issues w/ trapping. we have far more

the kemmer is a line of mountain cur. our curs are descended of the curs brought over britain in the colonial period. they are related to the smithfields. the blackmouth, catahoula & lacy dogs are mostly still true curs that work cattle or other large rough livestock and then go hunt up the meat for you. the blackmouth & catahoula are pretty stranger unfriendly on their own property. off property they mostly just ignore strangers. hard dogs to steal unless you use small children to do it. mountain curs, leopard curs, canadian curs & plott curs are almost exclusively hunting do

unfortunately i am down to one longdog and limited time due to the US Marine Corps & my 3 YO twin boys taking up most of it. when i had more time, i worked the hogdog (catahoula curXamerican bulldog) on hogs several times a month & on bear during the open season for bear. the running dog will try to catch boar but isn't built to really control the hog by himself. as i get more time again i will be bringing on another bullbreedX.

true that but when you start talking breeds or lines you go by the percentages not the exceptions. since most show types will be less capable.....

waidmann alot has to do w/hunting styles. we just don't do the organized drives like you describe. we may have a 3-4 guys and maybe 6-8 dogs and only run 1-3 at a time. they find the hog stop it from running and depending on personal preference catch & hold it there. all of this goes on while we're running to catch up. when we get there we stick it or catch it & tie it up to take with us and dispatch it later (or sell to paid hunting preserve). our hogs can run a damn long ways w/o ever being in sight of a shooter and could cross several properties if we used the little teckel or othe

first i owe you an apology, i thought you were comparing the sausage in the earlier post. however if i understand you correctly you want to know why the leggy "ingles" type is better than a fit athletic show type. it's the build the show type has a rectanular frame that is long & low even when in good shape. if you're running them loose to find & catch or just to catch what the finder's find then you will need the leg to stay w/ the other dogs and because the longer leg mean's it'll be less winded when it catches the hog. a short heavy but conditioned bully will do just fine the way mo
-
i think you're smoking something. the ingles type is hands down better equipped to do the job including power. a roman nose adds NOTHING to the dogs ability. if it did most holding breeds would have it.
-
waidmann i disagree. medium to large dogs are the only way to go when sticking hog especially when you get into boars kilos & bigger. bigger dogs have more control. i've seen really good dogos, a presa, american bulldogs, & various pitXs 30-50 kg literally knock 100kg hogs off their feet. little dogs OTH can only annoy big hogs never hurt them unless they learn to nut the hog. even w/ nutting they can't control the hog. i don't know everything but this has been my experience since my first hog hunt 31 years ago.
-
i like how he's baying tight while the other dogs are running way the heck away from the hog. probably just inexperience but i'd like to think it's guts.
