  1. i'd like to try one of those on whitetail. can't be anyworse than my salXgrey, probably hav a much better run up. should make a fair hogdog too, especially for spotlighting in crops. be able to track the ones they lose sight of.
  2. Stabs if you double the height on the cover in your pic, you have the crap i'm dealing with. whitetails don't like the open like fallows and others. some of the crap they reside in you look at it and wonder that anything can live there much less a 100# + deer.
  3. the area i live in is really thick coastal swamp broken up by open manicured areas like golf courses. my salXgrey has a horrible run up and can't seem to get the whitetail deer before they make cover. he's killed a fair bit of other stuff, but the deer are kicking his @$$. once in the cover the deer bound over it pretty slow about 20-25MPH (not sure what that is in KPH). but the dog can't make headway in it cause it's so thick. if i could get one to break in the open he'd catch no problem. he caught a mule deer doe out west in open country pretty quick. whitetail deer just keep heading for thi

used to be getting permission to hunt hogs was easy. now everybody is trying to cash in on the fad. for a dog with grit, catching and killing a coon as an adolescent will boost his confidence especially if he finds it himself. so walking golf courses at night is a great idea.
  5. most of the boar in the USA is feral from just as many breeds of pig as you can find in all of europe. british, irish and german breeds dominate american livestock because thats where most of the early colonists and immigrants came from. "pure russian" is mostly found on private hunting preserves. after 20 generations wild it doesn't matter anyway. somewhere between 10-20 generations in the wild under predatory presure they revert back to wild type even producing striped little piglets. hogs and dogs revert to original wild type fairly quickly. horses take longer. cats, goats and cows never s
  6. what state are you moving to? i haven't found one yet that specifically prohibits knifing. i know some of the western states are VERY specific about the weapons used for native big game. i also haven't been able to find the law or code in one of the alleged "must shoot" states that actually requires nongame animals be shot. i know North Carolina prohibits live capture of the wild russian boar (or any GAME animal except rabbit), so you either have to let it go or kill it. they have specific requirement about the firearms used but don't require you to use a firearm. most states do the same thing

if you don't already have one get a good baydog. your bulldog can't catch what hasn't been found and they just haven't got much nose. hogs here have been dogged since colonial days. you might catch the odd one but most days you'll go home empty handed w/just a bulldog. you dogo ( all your dogs really) need to get comfortable in the woods. take them for walks in safe ones like parks and such. let them run close to you and build their confidence about ranging out. also respond immediately to any little call for help eve if it's just a yip because he caught a thorn. it'll show him that you're in

    Boar Spear

no disrespect to you Osage. but why order outside the country when you can get a very nice working one from Cold Steel delivered to your door about $100. it's not going to be quite as pretty but neither will yours if they really put it to use. oh well, thats the nice thing about this country we can still pretty much buy whatever we want and can afford w/o any explanations to the neighbors.
  9. please explain what a deer dog does for you over there. here they push them out of the nasty thick cover and the hunter tries to position himself in front of the race for a shot. we use mostly foxhounds, beagles and their mixes for this.

    stupid question

hadn't thought about the floatline but probably will have one. why does it matter what they are made from (nylon, hemp, etc)? mesh sizes rang from 1/4" squares upto 6" squares w/ & w/o a line splitting them diagonally. can get netting heavy enough to hold 100# tuna, so i know they would be strong enough.
  13. all the nets sold here that are roughly equal to a long net are built for fishing, so they have leadweight along the bottom edge. other than the weight would this hurt, help or not matter for using the net out of the water?
  14. What's the biggest bore Air rifle available over there? What game is it capable of taking?

    farm ferrals

Why wast all that on ferrets? Pop out the breasts, season, wrap in bacon & roast gently.
  16. not voting because over here the only folks using nets are government agencies. but having discovered this site i will be lurking, it seems a right sharp way of catch a fair bit of game to fill the freezer. two questions can you set nets for game other than rabbit and which threads have good pictures of set nets?
  17. i am currently in Utah, but the Marines are sending me back to North Carolina soon.
  18. i enjoy killing deliscious animals. i prefer to work dogs but am interested in anything that might be considered subsistence techniques.
