Try to wait until you have a strong wind blowing into your proposed set. Weigh up how you can get into position without any noise or skylining, and practice setting and lifting your net with your eyes closed. Buy the art of longnetting by Harold Wyman. Good luck mate, ian.

Hi Stubby, I used to do a fair bit of trapping on an estate, and I found the duffus trap by far the best. On certain heavily imfested bits, I've regularly had two in a trap. If you cut the sod out to the exact length of the trap, and try to cut into the tunnel top as opposed to going deep, it's often just a clear of the holes with the fingers, a tweak here and there slide in the trap, and put a double handful of loose molehill over the top, to keep the light out, and you're in business. I tended to not obviously mark the traps. With the Dufus, it was just the upturned square sod I used. There

Hi friedrice. When I was a kid, I used copper wire with the burned out eyelets from shoes. It is however just that, kids stuff from the past. You owe it to your quarry to use very best available practice. Use a 22 1/2" six strand brass snare attached to one of Glenn Waters designed tealers set 6 1/2" high to the bottom of the snare. Things are changing, and soon we could see legislation to control our use of snares for rabbits. In the meantime I think we owe it to ourselves and our quarry to use best available imformation. Get in touch by PM with Geordie, he'll fix you up, and not at rip off p

Excellent post Duckwing, There is so much good information on this site.

im afraid it does not come double stranded, it is a single strand, same diam. as rabbit snare wire , it is extremely strong , its good for rats single stranded, and doubled ,the double strand snares are great for squirrels and rabbits , runs like lightning, woodga and i used it two srands of steel with two of brass and it made a very strong thin snare , i don,t know where you might get it now, as i got a few drums of 4kilos, and also ten kilos , it was given to me from an old guy who had it in his shed for years, he has since died . i gave peg and gun a drum also. but he may have sold it. duc

the problem with those that are doing the training is that they don,t have a vast experience on snaring themselves , the working class, can kiss my arse, ive got the foremans job at last. that about sums it up snareman brilliant , i,m laughing ike hell Is this just fox snares, as if rabbit snares have to be tagged it would be a nightmare. only fox snares ian, anyway you can buy tags all made to your specifications in the states , very cheap , not like the rip of merchants over here who would be wanting an arm and a leg as usual, Aye it seems that way Glenn. Any of my friends wh

I'd leave the planting out till late March early April, though you could sow onions or leeks on your widowsill or some tomato seeds. Plant them out later in the year.

Get in touch with Hop & Grape Darlington. They do a second to none mail order service.

Used to do the mashing sparging thing, I'd two boilers, a plastic one like Ditches, mines a Bruheat, A stainless steel one, three fermenters, and 5 secondary fermenters. I also had three pressure barrels, and dozens of bottles. The beer was beautiful, but the wife wanted the living room back. It used to be a Friday night Saturday morning thing. I'd do the mash and sparge on the Friday night, then the boil on the Saturday morning. I assure you it's possible to brew beers to rival real ales never mind the dish water sold in the pubs these days. One brew which is very near impossible to copy

They're the ones you want, 2" rings are Harold Wymans choice, or bigger than your full mesh if you're new to it, especially for after dark. These pins will last for ever without looking after.

I would reccomend 9" mesh and you will probably have to go 4mesh 4mesh 4mesh 5mesh, as it works out 4.235 mesh to a 9" pocket. It should be plenty as your net will only be 18" high, and thus baggy. As to why I said 9", only because it is the height that was suggested to me and it worked. 6" might be better I don't know, but 9" works fine.

I agree Ditch', will pig netting keep out otters. Just asking because increased prevention must be the way forward. ian.

Hi mate try Solway feeders, they are cheap and ok. ian.

Aye ditch, I know what you're saying. Some of the things I've heard have not been good for us. I've pulled one or two for suggesting things on here with traps too. We must be seen to be responsible caring people. Most of us are and Glenns designs are there for the taking. AS you say, a properly stopped noose with a break away, a step over and checked twice a day, would alleviate all the criticisms pointed to by LACS. I hope you catch soon in your Larsen too Ditch, I was nearly in myself. I had an idea for a crow trap today, I saw a magpie larsen at a farm shop and it gave me an idea for a

I saw GSW mention snaring videos on utube, so I went for a nose about, and as you would imagine, there are Yanks crunching about setting stainless steel wires in the snow and the usual tat. Then I found this. Who needs the truth to ban snaring when a little propoganda will do. and this http://youtube.com/watch?v=UozIYKdcwkc&feature=related

I was nearly onto that perch myself Ditch, looks spot on to me.

Well done mate, however, I'd leave the lamp at home after the reconnaissance session. Be like a ghost setting the net, and once you're walking them in , tap a net peg on your welly or rattle a box of matches. Cording, of banting as Harold Wyman calls it is best but you really need two people to drag the field in with a line. As someone mentioned you can tail the end of your net out, especially on lighter nights or when the rabbits are spooky. Good hunting ian.

If they're dirty but dry hang them up, if they are dirty and wet, then wash them in washing up liquid and warm water, I don't like biological washing powder as I think it rots stuff. Rinse thouroughly, and hang up to dry, preferably outside in a breeze, but if not in the house. A hanger for a dozen nets can easily be made out of a metal coathanger, cut one of the sloping top sides and form a hook on both ends so they hook together. Now a twist here and there to bring it back into shape, and with a careful bit of balancing work you can get a dozen or so nets on so they're not touching each othe

Try Geordie mate, or Ditch's suggestions, they're all good lads, and will see you ok:thumbs:

Hi jakk. You'll find plenty of help here. Firstly, like a lot of good netters on this site, Harold Wyman recommends a pole every 5 yards. Personaly I have worked with a lot less and had no problems. You have so many variables. The terrain, the tension in your running lines or chords. The number of rabbits, the height of your pegs and there are other things, how straight you can set, etc. All these things can affect you. If the ground has a lot of dips and hollows, you need a peg in every low bit, certainly on the bottom chord if not on the top. You definitely need one each end, and if you

have any of you lads seen the rabbit snaring on you tube , what a load of rank amateurs , it would bring tears to a glass eye , and shop bought rabbit snares for sale on ebay, will they ever learn, they are as bad as bear grylls he was trying to snare rabbits with para cord , the loops were hanging like wind blown larches , and drunk men, and these are survival experts . I took a look Glenn, shitesville Arizona. They'd all be dead in a survival situation. ian.

Not just yet, mate, as I have no eggs right now. But, as soon as I get round to it I'll be slapping some in there and am perfectly confident of getting a Call Bird sharpish. Sort out the bugger haunting my own ground. Then I'll ship it up to Noels place, up on the road. Probably follow up by scooting it along to Pat's too. Quite looking foreward to completely annhialating the local maggie population this year, me. I'm in the mood for it now Do you have carrion crows in Ireland Ditch, or do you get the hoodies?, and, do you get crows in with eggs or just magpies. ian.
