Am I looking at the right thing?
Stavross replied to Stavross's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
Well thanks for the advice, I’ve bit the bullet and bought the canon with the extra lens, I’ve watched every review I can find and although it’s an entry level camera no one says it’s not worth the money and if I learn to use it it’s a lot more than a point and shoot, so we’ll give it a go ? -

Cheers mate, yeah, ten minutes from my house and I work out the back of saltholme, I quite often sit up there with my bino’s and a bit further up watching the seals -

Thank you for that, them pictures are amazing, I think I’m going to treat myself to the canon and see how I get in with it ? -
Think I’m going to have fun here!!

Wow, that’s a lot of fox, looks like you have made a good start on them, nice work ? -
Well we had an hour out and it was positively tropical at -4, even the rabbits thought better of it with just a handful about, no fox, the bait has gone but the camera didn’t catch it due to the lens being frozen over, put another camera in the front field near to the spot where I’ve been seeing it, it’s looking like an early morning thing now so depending on work I might put a night shift in and do the pheasant shoot first

Yeah, they shouldn’t be doing it but they seem to think they know best, my mate who runs the shoot sent someone home last year for shooting at a hare, he didn’t like this and never came back this season, you don’t need to be shooting with people like that
-
We have a no ground game rule on the shoot, but for some of the more experienced guns they take this more as a suggestion than a rule with a couple been shot on the drives last season, this is all well and good until someone gets hurt

That’s what it’s like around here, we do have residents on the shoot that we try and get at, but these will also wander onto other land and other lads from around us keep at them as well, so we help each other out, last year we had 7 off the shoot but the shoot out the back of us took 16, the sheep farm I shoot on has no earths on it so what comes on there is wandering in from surrounding areas, I once watched a documentary about foxes and some will travel miles in a night and some will stay in one area, most of this was the availability of food but for some they just went on the wander, what

I’ve managed to get them to come in earlier with baiting quite a few times but only by a few hours, like you say there’s a good chance it’s coming from a good way off, there’s also the chance that it’s not the one I’ve been seeing in the front field because it’s a big area for just one of them and with the surrounding farms and woodland it could be from anywhere

Hello chaps, I’m after a bit of advice, I keep looking at cameras as all my pictures are taken with my phone at the minute, now I know nothing about photography so was thinking of an entry level DSLR, the one that keeps coming up is the Canon eos 4000d, would this camera be any good for general wildlife photography and is it worth the £350 price tag, it comes with a 18-55mm and 75-300mm lens, any advice would be greatly received or any other recommendations, I don’t want to spend thousands in case it’s not for me and it need to be pretty much idiot proof with me behind it ?
-
Ha ha, you need to smell like wildlife not my dear old grandad ?
-
I think I’ll put a jumper on with my shorts tonight because there is a little nip in the air?
-
Well I’m going to give it an hour tomorrow night see if anything is about, might try another spot as well seen as this fella is turning up a daft o’clock, so if longshanx’s lays off the old spice we might come across something ?
-
It’s all about time, I’m a very busy man ?

Working on the farm today so I had a trip down the road to check the camera, ginger bollocks turned up just before 5 this morning and took one of the pigeons ( other one still there ) so it’s getting a bit earlier, I took the .22 with me for a bit of rabbit bait as I’ve been warned to leave the cat food alone ?
-
We will have to see, I wouldn’t mind catching that on the camera
-
Where I’ve been baiting is about 75 yards from my pigeon hide I’ve made in a hedge back so as long as the wind is the right direction I’ll be in there failing that if it’s the other way I’ll be in another spot about 130 yards from the bait, the problem with that is it’s a bit open so would need a bit of cloud for that

Not when I’ve been struck down with this debilitating illness ? Im receiving no sympathy as I’m told IT’S A COLD, GET A GRIP OF YOURSELF, she knows nowt -
I’m going to keep baiting this week as it will be the weekend before I can have a go at it, with any luck it might make it it’s first port of call, failing that it’s looking like an early start ?

So I went down to move the camera today and to my surprise foxy Mcfox face has turned up, it was caught on Sunday morning just before 6am so I’ve left it where it is and baited with 2 pigeons, I could do with it coming on an evening because I’m to lazy to be getting out of bed early morning, but we’ll see over the next week if it’s habits change ?
-
That looks very nice ?

Well I checked the camera last night while out with a young lad from the pheasant shoot having his first go at the rabbits with the rifle, nothing but a few rabbits and the bait is still there, so tomorrow I’ll be moving it into the front field where I’ve been seeing it and baiting it with a couple of pigeons, I would of preferred to take it in the bottom field but if it’s just passing through the front I’ll give it a go and try to get it in a shootable position
