advice for wanna-be-gamekeepers
ad22 replied to nathgoon's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
I went back to college at 21 to try and get a national diploma in game and countryside management, the course wasn't great but it allowed me to get my foot in the door when i went looking for a work placement, i did a year on a big shoot 30,000+ , ( by the way it isnt economically viable or sensible to buy in poults. Most low ground shoots will expect a full time keeper to rear most or at least some of his own birds.) Doing my placement meant i could prove myself and gave me the opportunity to meet lots of other keepers to once i was known to be a good worker on the estate i was on, the h -
Was also wondering what is good to help stop birds straying... Some of them are quite expensive right? How much per ton of wheat do you need and what is the price? Was thinking it would probbaly be good to spin the laced wheat as on a big shoot such as ours i imagine it could work out to be pretty expensive to add it to all the wheat. We get through around 15 tonne every 20 days. Thanks for any info.

People think polecats are extremly rare, you read any wildlife book and it will tell you they aren't found outside of the welsh hills. We have loads by us, I see lots dead on the roads and have seen a fair few about. I also know how many a neighbouring keeper has caught in a dropbox this season, he has of course been able to release them as drop boxs are live catch traps. Worth remembering polecats are protected and supposedly very rare this being the case its far more likely to be a feral ferret. lol

I reckon they probbally flown into the pen. We reared 5000 partridge and when we moved them to the big sheds and big runs (2500 in each) Everytime i would go into feed the runs no matter how gently and slowly i would go one of the flightly lil sods would fly so fast into something it would break its neck, back, leg, head etc.. They can kick themselves around the pen some amazing distances even when they are stone dead from flying into something. Hexamiter at this stage, im guessing they are out in their release pens, is unlikely. I shouldn't worry to much, have good natural looking t

Id also like to say a big thank you to JohnB.. He has been extremly helpful in giving me advice, his book is fabulous and even for someone like me that doesn't do much building of anything it made great sense, great pictures and cutting guides, fantastic book! Id also like to say thank you for sorting me out with some genuine fenn traps, i haven't seen them for sale anywhere else and after one of my cheap mk4s fell to pieces and i needed some quickly i spoke to John and placed my order and as i needed them quickly he went above and beyond the call of duty and as we live fairly near to one

Have had one in use near a feeder, haven't had much luck with it yet, they were feeding from it when it was upside down and they could easily get it, but when it was turned the right way up and set the squirrels didnt try and push through the first door into the trap, am trying again maybe will try and hold the door open a bit this time with a stick so that they may try and push their way in. Have found fenn traps in tunnels with a sprinkling of grain in far far more effective.

Hi all, Have just started trapping this year on a shoot which has been left for some 10 years and is full of predators. Have had good success with trapping squirrels in fen traps by the feeders but haven't caught any stoats etc. although i think they might be about as something very small burrowed under the ladder trap and killed the crow that was in there but left the dead squirrels etc that was in there. The hole was very small and no way could have been a fox or badger or anything like that. So i presume it was a stoat as it was a fair way away from the nearest stream. Which is righ

Hi all, Im 22 years old and currently working towards my national diploma in countryside management - game & fish. Part of my qualification is being out on a work placement for 12 weeks between late may and october. Im based in warwickshire so preferably looking for any local shoots or estates that would like some help with the day to day duties. I have my own transport and a full clean driving license. I am willing to travel. However if accommodation on site is avaliable at an estate that is a long distance from my home i would be happy to consider that. Im hard w

If your dog is just starting unless you already known people with land its going to be hard to get permission when you will just want to be getting the odd rabbit here or there, just do some walking and look for signs of rabbits, your just walking your dog if she catches one it happens, until you are catching good numbers not many landowners will give you permission and you don't really need it either but shhh dont say i told you.

Yeah very nice bitch that. So are they irish hares? certainly a very beautiful healthy looking hare, they don't look any smaller than the brown hare are they? What do you think the main differances are between the irish and brown hare?

Blackdog trading is good. I would just use a length of nylon strapping through the collar though. Infact i have a quick release lead/collar you can buy if you want.

I had a £15 1million power candle power lamp from homebase and lamped with that for nearly 6 months and it was fine for staying out for an hour and having a few runs, it was plenty powerful enough and had the battery built in to it, best sort to start with i think. This x-mas good old santa claus brought me a proper lamping kit and its great, but i still think the cheap one from homebase was well worth the money and a great lamp to start with until you are sure you want to spend lots of money on a proper kit.

Shortage of rabbits........?
ad22 replied to Rolfe's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Im in the West midlands and summer quite a bit of myxie around, but that is all over and done with now and the rabbit population is stable, still only around 1/5th of what it was in the summer but that is to be expected every year. The healthy rabbits are starting to breed again and i am seeing young rabbits and quite a few are deciding to squat at first instead of run, like it was in summer they are tough lil beasts but after summer you need to look on ideal weather nights to really get a feel for the population i can go out on a still night and not see a single rabbit where there are scores -
Yeah our scent hounds are pretty different to some of the U.S. hounds i have seen. I have read some books on hunting big game in the states and how the pack works together each with their different job and how they are bred for working ability etc. some catch dogs, some with good voices etc. (packs work the same here but the quarry doesn't really require a scent hound like big game does in the U.S.) I think hunting with scent hounds in the states would be fun. My uncle currently lives in kentucky, was in michigan and south carolina before. I would say that sight hounds are more my sort o

They still use scent hounds here, in the form of beagle for hare hunting, foxhounds for foxes, stags for deer, mink/otter for mink. Although the hunting of all the above mentioned quarry is now banned, hunting with scent hounds here is usualy a formal affair often followed by the more well to do, people dress up in pretty old english clothes and sometimes ride horses with the hounds. There isn't the exciting/dangerous quarry here like in the states. My uncle lives in the states he has a few friends that hunt with hounds there. The u.k. just doesn't have the land mass/wilderness

Yeah mountain lion or cougar, they hunt in the U.S. with tracking hounds mostly often will have a hard dog like a pit bull with the pack aswell. They will often track for days on end, the hunter i think usualy has a gun though so that when the mountain lion is treed it is shot.

Disgusting, i don't get what they are doing it for, just seems cruel. They are using the tame wolf like a lure, i hope it turns around and bites one of the f**kers hands off.

Was very wet (wellie kept getting stuck in the mud), suppose to be gale force winds on their way, just a bit breezy now, was fairly still when i went out, got one rabbit and we saw a very nice hare that was nearly trodden on before it got up.
