A team I played in the 60s and seventies still has reunions every year. The numbers are dropping off year by year and we are a lot better behaved now when we are out but we still meet. The bonds you make playing in a team full of genuine mates are special.

I kid you not, one of our treble winning seasons me and my forward partner scored 94 goals between us….lads can believe that or not but it’s absolutely true, our pals wouldn’t get up from their dinner to come and see us if we were in town ! lol…..but when Dave visited back from New Zealand a good few lads made the effort to come and see him, that’s how much he was respected.

This is off topic, but my all time footballing hero in the 50s was Man U's Harry Gregg. Reason? Not only was he a brave, athletic keeper, but he twice entered the smouldering flames of the burning Munich plane to rescue unconscious passengers. My sons' hero was Wayne Rooney, prolific goalscorer and equally adept at shagging prostitute grannies and buying threesomes when his wife's in labour. f**k me. No wonder society's values are weird.

I agree about modern keepers, but I think lads who know the game and played amongst a few decent players/decent standard always knew how important a good keeper was….a good keeper (imho) was always as important in winning things as any other part of the team. Agree about how the modern game has expanded the role of keeper to something really good, but in fairness there was a few lads just doing that naturally back in the day. A good keeper will make everyone in front of him better, he will make them more confident…….the amount of lads here who play keeper that I’ve told just about always

I'm watching Benfica v Madrid. Junior scores a good goal. He then deliberately winds up the opposition crowd and goes on to waste TEN bleedin minutes complaining about being racially abused. The ref should have told both captains he was going to re-start the game, placed the ball on the centre spot and blown his whistle. To borrow a rule from boxing...protect yourself at all times! What was it that that Victor Meldrew used to say? I DON'T f****n BELIEVE IT!

Talking goalkeepers, which we weren't. I think modern keepers are definitely superior to goalies say, 30_ 50 years back. The are taller, better coached and therefore better shot stoppers. They are fitter, have better trained reflexes and they distribute the ball more professionally with feet and throws. You rarely see hit _and_ hope boots up the field from keepers these days. Back in the day keepers were braver and put themselves in amongst feet and heads and were allowed to be much more physical ( some were evil) but they weren't really considered key players in a team.
