ferret1 6
The ferrets we all work and enjoy working deserve better treatment than just a whack on the head when they get ill they work all winter with no complaints. I have 6 ferrets that i have taken off peoplr that were going to whack em on the head because they were "ill" took em to the vets and majority of em just have nt been fed properly or looked after. some of them have to be pts but whats the cost of haveing that done at the vet to the amount of work that that ferret has done for you. they are not just a ferret they are the tools of our trade so they deserve a little bit of respect. COMPO 54
Euthanasing your own animals is not illegal in the UK (one of the few things that aint) but causing un-necessary cruelty is an offence, probably best to use a gun to ensure instant death if the need arises! I have taken ferrets to teh vets before, the main problem is their knowledge of ferrets is poor! I have also put to sleep my own ferrets when they were in a very very bad way! it breaks my heart as they earn me money through rabbits Quote Link to post
mackay 3,580
this thread should be deleted. Its a dream come true for any anti reading. Its down to the individual at the end of the day no need for discussion of this subject totally agree with you Theres nothing illegal about euthanising your own pets as far as im aware, as long as its humane. As far as i can see the antis cant get jack shit from this thread, people put there working animals to sleep as an alternative to the vet doing it. As long as nobody says anything daft i cant see a problem with this thread. is completely ilegal and an inappropriate subject for a this forum. fair enough pal, you obviously know more than me on the matter. ill leave it there I think you'll find he doesn't, it's not illegal. mackay 3,580
i either shoot or a quick pull of the neck to dispatch my quarry So explain to me the difference between say pulling a rabbits neck or shooting it and chapping an old or sickly ferret on the head and why you think the latter is innapropriate and any more ammunition for the antis than the former. Malt 379
Threads like this always stir up emotions, just like the ones about breeding purely for yourself, then culling the excess. We should not be ashamed to talk about things like this, there's nothing illegal been mentioned, and at the heart of everyone's comments so far, is the welfare of their animals. No need for things to get silly or resorting to petty name calling, so far so good. Quote Link to post
halfx 3
seems a stupid question in the 1st place, but seeing as you asked ,if a shovel not handy i may take my boot off and whack it very hard with that,if that wont have the desired effect then i will strangle him with my sock.ffs. mackay 3,580
If its not ilegal to euthanize a domestic animal someone put up the legislation that proves it You put up the legislation that says it is illegal that would be easier. Quote Link to post
halfx 3
legislation against what the shovel or the boot, didnt no they were illegal Quote Link to post

Guest tewkesferreter
i cant find anything about uthanazia on domestic animals only ill treatment= it is an offence; to cruelly beat, kick, ill treat, over ride, over drive, torture, infuriate or terrify any animal, or to cause the animal any unnecessary suffering by wantonly or unreasonably doing or omitting to do any act (e.g. failing to treat injuries). i found this but it dosnt say if it applys to domestic or wild animals= under section 10, a person will not be guilty of a section 9 section 10 offence if; the animal was killed because it was seriously disabled and had no real chance of recovery. Meriln2008 0
The only times I've despatched any ferret or dog was because it would no longer be able to enjoy the quality of life it was used to because of what ailed it. I will not see any of mine suffer. I've had many of both unable to work well anymore but happy in thier retirement for years. Unfortunatley thier life span is a lot shorter than ours.and we have to deal with it. I would never keep an animal alive for my sake, (Which many so called animal lovers do) Seeing an aged dog in a wheeled harness because it's @rse end has given up IS cruelty to the animal. They do thier best for you.you should do your best for them >>>>> (EDITED SPELLING) Edited March 13, 2009 by Meriln2008 Quote Link to post

dogs-n-natives 1,182
Option 1: Take ill ferret to vet, to be humanely put to sleep. Option 2: Humanely dispatch yourself. My opinion: I would do it myself, same with an aged dog which needs pts... then I will happy in the knowledge that my ferret has died instantly with no pain and no stress from being taken to vets. Totally legal if done properly with utmost respect for your animal. And so it should be, why pay someone to do something which you can do a better job of yourself? Edited to say, the vets bills are not the issue with me at all, and if any of my ferrets are needing a vet they see one asap! Having a sister who is a vet helps a bit here though!
