I think I’ve told you this before;

some years back, I did three months pro bono work for the DWP.

It was when they were closing the dole offices and going on line so I was helping claimants to set up an email account and construct a resume’.

I was appalled at the number of people in their 40’s and 50’s who couldn’t read or write and had opted out of school at 12 or 13 !

Surely the education system should have picked this up, that they were illiterate before that age ? How they got through life is beyond me .

Cheers.

I know a good few Gypsy lads who are illiterate and left school at 13 or 14 they do alright and aren't ripping folk of I think it is there dna to do it one Gypsy I know retired at 40 can't read or write but can count notes like the rain man I know a few who struggled with school life but are gifted with there hands I think some just can't be academic but are talented in other areas and just crack on with earnings a good living

While I don’t disagree, I ask how much better they could have been if they COULD read and write ? 👍

Cheers.

I’m not a fan of it mate, I think it’s embarrassing…..there’s just no reason for it.

My old man learned to read and write in a POW camp !…..but that’s in the 1940s !…….no reason to crack on like that in the last 50 /70 years.

Sending your kids out in the world unable to read or write at 13 and doing it completely deliberately is like sending them out the door dressed in rags imho.

I look at like this mate, at some point in those peoples formative years there was an adult at home who knew that !!…….what the f**k were they upto while that poor f****r was going through life illiterate ?

Like, that age group is my generation !…….absolutely no excuses for it.

I know in my own case WILF my parents knew no better genuinely. Neither of mine could read or write and looking back I don’t think either had any interest. They were raised in a time where big things like that just wasn’t for you. My father was a very clever and intelligent man who by one means or another got ahead in life and never let anything hold him back. He ducked and dived for over 50 years he didn’t know what a day off was every day there was a turn to be had and he made sure he would be there. A prime example of what a man can do with abit of venom in his veins and fire in his belly. When he passed away we were all shocked by what he had amassed in his ‘working’ life. Finally all the shite we had waded through as a family for 50 years paid dividends 🤣

Well here's my six pence worth.

I wouldn't presume to give anybody advice on how to parent. All children are different and not one size fits all.

My own experience of school was utterley miserable. At 11, I was sent, a pauper, a charity case,  to a posh school where, with my background, and, let's say, cultural norms, I was doomed to failure. I went from top third in the A class, to bottom of the B class to bottom of the C class in 3 terms and then I was out by 13.

For some reason, the local comp wouldn't or couldn't take me because I had been selected at 11 for a different future. Pretty soon after that, fate and bad luck found me in a residential school for fuckwits and bad boys where  bullying, staff on pupil paedophilia, boxing , running and endless drills seemed to form the curriculum.

On my second day there, my sense of humour and smart mouth led to me to run foul of a particularly stupid and sadistic teacher. He was reading aloud a story in a children's book intended for kids of about 6 or 7. I remember the line he read out to this day. Word for word. It read: "Penelope smelled the Nasturtium flower" . He mispronounced both Penelope and Nasturtium, and not thinking, I muttered "thick c**t" under my breath. Damn me if a fellow pupil, a reknowned fuckwit that didn't understand the unwritten code of ' never grass' told the teacher word for word what I'd said. Believe me, over the next 6 months I paid for my smart arsed comment time and time again. Its only because you will all collapse in tears ( or laughter) that I'm not going to dwell on how he paid me back with interest. Suffice to say he was a very limited  c**t, retard, twat, a veritable knuckle dragging, accomplished persecutor of children, me in particular lol.

But I digress. Here's my take on schools. You only get what you pay for and truly value. The UK spends a good deal less on Education than  France and Germany for example and helluva lot less than the Nordic countries.

Imo the UK system is  geared toward academic children and non academic children pretty soon realise that a life of shit, poorly paid jobs await them. That school is a con.

Solution? Copy the German system where kids are routed into either technical/ vocational schools or academic schools depending on their choices and abilities. Crucially, there is a lot less snobbishness about the German system. Academic children are not treated like little gods and technical kids aren't treated as second class. A nybody who has ever worked in Germany will tell you that workers are treated with far more respect and enjoy higher wages than they are in the UK.

Even better is the Finnish system where teachers have to undergo a rigorous selection process. They need to not only be suited to teaching personality wise, but also have top notch qualifications similar to our doctors and other top professionals. In Finland each child is treated as an individual with personal educational requirements. If anything ,the academic children have less focus upon them because they can pretty much teach themselves. The Finns' educaction system has been  voted the best in the world for several years on the trot.

The UK spends a lot less on Education, Health and other public services  ( even our roads) than other comparable countries. This is because our leaders do not use our public  services. They  can afford to go private. Check out the Nordic countries . There are next to  no private schools or private hospitals, because the public services are so excellent. But you'v e got to be prepared to pay for it through taxes. There's the rub.The brits want, like the USA, to be a low tax society. To many brits paying taxes is an affront . They cite waste and inefficiency. Fair points, but that exists anywhere there is money. You get what you pay for imo.

When I retired, I took a a part time  job working with 'unteachables'. Most girls could read and write.  Most boys couldn't. I took them fishing, to football, some of the boys to boxing classes and tried to improve their behaviour. It was an OK job. You had some successes but mostly failures. The stories the kids had were worse than Dickensian.  Multiple step dads, drug addict parents, sexual abuse,  you name it. They were so damaged there was little you could do with them. You couldn't even be parental , you darent put an arm  around  their shoulder  In case of false accusations.

And in amongst these kids were kids who simply had 'isms' and had been dumped into mainstream, ostensibly to treat them equally but in reality to save money.

I packed it in pretty quickly. I was not impressed with the UK's Education system.

And if you've made it to the end of one of my lengthy bollox. Give yourself a gold star and think of my poor Mrs who has to deal with my opinions and bollox on a daily basis.

As a wider discussion about education, some great points there mate.

But, in my humble opinion the problem with the British education system can be summed up in one word….OFSTED !

You speak of a lack of money, but in reality there’s enough money , just !……but it’s getting ironed out on absolute shite to appease OFSTED

And the way schools are funded, secondary education especially, means that the OFSTED score is the difference between just keeping the head above water or bankruptcy !
OFSTED was the nice, neat political solution…..as always, pen pushers think the answer to everything is more pen pushers !

So, I’m sure you know this already but for those who don’t here it is, a school receives a set amount of money per head on year 7 intake, that’s a forever number as in it’s meant to last them the whole 5 years……so this is why the OFSTED score matters……because lazy parents simply look at the score and want to send their kids to the school with the best score.

They don’t go to a few schools and look round, they don’t see if that school may be the best fit or take their kids on tours to see if the kid gets a good feeling for a certain school….they just look at the number !

The OFSTED “number” is based on loads of different criteria…you may think it’s just about academic achievement?…..it isn’t !

A school that pupils love and are happy in, that thrive, that get fairly good results can end up in special measure because their front gate wasn’t deemed by a certain inspector on a certain day to be up to scratch !

So now they have to go and spend £60,000 on a new gate system which means they have to cut subjects and classes because they can’t afford them anymore ! (That’s a true story !)

The lower OFSTED score means parents don’t now want their kids to go to this school because they think the number means something….so now the new year 7 intake is 50 kids shy of where it should and needs to be…….thats a drop of 250 years of funding for one child !…..now imagine what the knock on effect of that is ?

You then couple that with a teacher shortage which means they have to hire in sub standard teachers from all over the show, some of whom can barely speak English or be understood by their class…..and once they have them, they can’t get rid of them if they prove to be shite because employment law won’t let you and the school can’t afford the pay off !

All the above it totally true and from first hand experience !
It’s an ever decreasing circle of shite created by politicians to use as a political football !

They know their audience well, because most parents can’t be bothered to join in and find out and try and help…..they look at the score, pack little Fred or Janice off to the “school with the best score”, leave ‘em at the gate and f**k off !
Meanwhile good schools can’t survive and kids suffer and end up at one of these terrible “super schools” with rolls in excess of 2000 or 2500 pupils !

Howling !, how the f**k can a kid thrive in a gaff like that ?
