The boat, which is a family's home, will be refloated in the new year.

I've been on a boat myself the past few months. Skippering a trawler in the North Sea. A job I did moons' ago.

I took a few refresher courses ,passed my medical and bang! out at sea again. I'm exhausted, stressed out with responsibility, but there's nothing like it.

If I hadn't gone the family route, I would have chosen this life. You're hunting all the time. All your senses are on edge but it's really pleasurable. I love the hard weather, the screaming of the gulls, the ocean swells, the gannets and the company of dolphins.

I must be up there as one of the oldest at 76. I'm helping out a friend who had a heart attack. Repaying a favour he did for me years back.

I don't do the physical stuff. I stay in the wheelhouse.

We've made brilliant money, which is all that matters. I"ve got twin grandsons graduating next year, so the bulk of what I earn I'm going to donate to them to go travelling.

I've got another two months to go. I smell like a ferret's shit heap at the end of a week at sea and I am literally, as the song says, " sleeping on my feet," but I've never enjoyed myself so much for years.

The crew consists of two Filipinos, a lazy, useless, f***ing Pole and a " hard as nails"Scot. I thought Poles were supposed to be hard working? Don't believe that stereotype.  Not this fella.

They work three six hour shifts in 24 hours. So it's very tough.

When I was a young un, you worked for a share of the catch and you could make really big money. But nobody works that system anymore. I dont ask what they are paid, none of my business. It will be a fraction of what I used to earn. But I insisted on being paid on the old system. Helping a mate out works both ways.

The Pole was hammered by the two filipino lads for costing us about two grand due to a faulty knot he was too idle to tie properly. . Served him right.

The Scot ,I've worked with before. The following story is true so help me. 

He fell overboard in freezing conditions. We  managed to hook him out. He was blue with cold and unconscious.

We stripped him off. Pumped a feckin gallon of water out of him and, miraculously, he spluttered into life.

As God is my judge he was back out on deck within an hour. Unbelievably tough bloke. And a bloke to avoid when he's had a drink. You couldn't meet a better bloke ....until he's had a drink.

I watch that tv show sometimes about the trawlers around the UK....they seem to still get paid a share of the catch...

Great stuff Jukel there’s life in the old dog yet. It seems to be something that gets into people’s blood I’ve seen a couple of older lads who never really adjusted to life when they had retired from sea. Enjoy every minute and send a few pics of the catch.
