Qbgrey 4,267 Posted yesterday at 15:28 Report Share Posted yesterday at 15:28 Left school on off from about 11 yr old , labouring, hod carrier a bit later , then went on the yts scheme bricklaying, picked it up early and was on the huge sums of £67.50 aday at 17 / 18 yrs old same as the older trowels. Bought a house at 18, worked 7 days a week, done banger racing so sold parts to people off the cars we stripped out. Went to Asia at 22 yrs old and worked on sites, had a company out thier got into a bit of naughtiness, over charging, charging day rate for 25 men ( only had 5) charged for night shift too when did nt really work it, and on top of that we was on price work for the same day work jobs so treble money. Was importing lorry’s , mini buses , pickups with re stamped chassis number over the the site as thier was a year cut off on the vehicles allowed . Got a bit out of hand at the end had the icac after us. Came home back bricklaying, sell a few bits .
gnipper 6,778 Posted yesterday at 17:21 Report Share Posted yesterday at 17:21 I've only had 3 proper jobs, underkeeper, apprentice plasterer and nurseryman which has been the longest one. Couple of little cash in hand things like shovelling out broiler cabins and tomato picking but they don't count to me. I was always wanting to be a vet when I was a kid and still regret not doing it but my nature and teachers speaking to me like shit didn't get on.

Arry 24,757
Obgrey's post caught my eye Hod Carrying. But I have had a lot of jobs. Was a different time though, you could just turn up and ask for a start not like now ticket for this ticket for that health and safety etc. The first job I had was in about 1965 at 14 at a market garden for a tight old f****r Mr Hallkins. Payed by the hour 10d and a half pence old money (f**k that less than 5p). He had a little book called a Ready Reckoner so many hours at such I such price. Then took on two paper rounds while still at school. Left school became an apprentice Electrician for Dartington Hall working in the theatre there. Interesting but the hours were grime for a young lad, I was the best payed in my class at Tec £5 a week. I was amazed by a mime artist you might have heard of called Marceau Marcel, I had to help him set the stage and lights incredible guy I will never forget him. Enough of that I jacked after I got my City and Guilds and went on the roads A38 Duel carriageways theres no motorway south of Exeter. Then Wimpey's where in did ground works and the dreaded Hod Carrying 12 bricks up and down the ladder all day plus the muck. Worked on boats first letting little motor boats and rowing boats, it was great fun working in just denim shorts all summer. Got a boatman licence could take people out on pleasure trips but money was crap. Tried few dip shit jobs one in a pottery didn't like that and an engineering company that I thought would be interesting. How wrong was I, I was put on a jig like a bottle jack and had to stretch these boat handrail fittings. The most interesting thing that happened was a artic drove past the small window in front of me. The owner said at the end of the day "see you tomorrow" I answered "you f***ing won't" he said "oh I have other jobs" I replied "and that why you won't see me". Worked on the heavy gang in a timber yard unloading timber ships bloody hot job that. Went back to ground works and after a while I thought I would go self employed. Things went better and better I ended up as a main contractor earning really good money. But the Thatcher recession in 1980 f****d me up one minute boom then interest rate 17%. Ended up I was pay my guys more than I was getting so jacked it all in. Well I had a good run about 15 years. Did a gangers job for a big company but wasn't enjoying it so got a job in a factory on the shop floor production line. Transferred to maintenance which was not bad apart from it was shifts. after some years they closed the factory 6000 laid off. Did couple years as a maintenance manager till I had a row with the owner chucked the tools in the car and f****d off. Think I was 62 then nobody wants you then so I went back to self employed bought a good mower, strimmer, hedge trimmer did gardening, driving diggers and machines for farmer. Did stone walling, hedge laying and ground works happy days. I intended to go to 4 day week at 63 it never happen till I was 65. I work for another year as people didn't want me to stop. They all thought they were friends, and I suppose in a way they were. Some are still very good friends. Told you I had a few jobs and theres a few missing Lol. Cheers Arry 3
jukel123 9,398
I think moving jobs keeps you fresh. I worked in total for 40 odd years. Staying in one job would have driven me in sane. I could still work part time if I wanted. Ive been offered a few jobs. A friend in his forties wanted me to go half's on a hoof trimming business. ( Cows) Another wants me to milk part time. But I like my freedom. And getting kicked, gored or trod on by cows is a big thing when you are older. Not to mention getting shat and pissed on. Your body is a lot frailer as you age, whether you admit it or not. You can't put a price on your freedom. A mate of mine has had a longstanding feud with HMRC. He says he' ll be put away again shortly. For me I haven't got enough time to lose months locked up. But he's determined his kids are going to get his money and not the taxman. Think Iv said it before on here but o tell me kids often that when I was younger I went through some ammount a jobs, I just couldn’t handle being spoke to like shite, or have lazy cnuts watch me do the graft, in the end I’d convinced meself I was lazy, I just couldn’t stick to any job I’d had, but knew I was capable of being out all day with dogs or rods. Then as a last resort I joined army, a within a few weeks I felt great, knew where I stood am what was expected of me, flew through training a got off to a good start, met a bird an settled down an then when she fell pregnant I didn’t wanna be there anymore. Got out army an then started feeling as tho I was lazy again, tried a few daft jobs local an hated every Fcuking breath of them haha was offered a bit of work on a farm to help a pal who had done his wrist in, said why not, knew a little bit about countryside but nowt about farming, so from day 1 I was learning, it was hard graft but didn’t feel like a job, I was actually really en enjoying it, and good at it, do a lot of agri pests now mostly moles, rabbits an rat an mice, but still do a fair bit on farms me mates own or folk I know ask me for a bit help moral of the story, don’t hate what you do, lifes to short, find summat you wanna do an make it work haha cos the difference in the way you feel yourself between doing summat for money an doing summat you enjoy is huge
Halfhound 118
Have to tip the cap to anybody who works in the same job for their whole lives probably not entirely happy just to keep a family going and live straight. I could never live week to week working in some factory for some f****r creaming off others hard work but I understand some people didn’t have a choice. I must have listened to too much Christy Moore ha.
