Found this about 3 foot deep in the bank of the river; looks and feels old but can't find the mark anywhere.

Looks like what’s known as a marmalade pot

mid 1800s at a guess could be wrong though

So a pot nearly 200 years old was just in the river bed? That sounds mental to me, how it's not been damaged is beyond belief

I’ve got a lot of these, different sizes.
There’s an old mine shaft near my allotment where a local hospital, now long gone , dumped their rubbish.

Bottle collectors are always digging it up and a lot of the stuff is in good condition.

The local Sewerage farm was built on an old Victorian bottle tip, We spent hours digging around there when we were kids. All gone now mind, buried under houses.

Have they got any marks underneath?

No, I looked for them but nothing I can see.

If you Google vintage marmalade jars there’s some for sale.

Cheers.

Used to find loads when we were kids in the mud on the River Avon as well as clay pipes and codd bottles, being kids we used to just smash them up especially the codd bottles to get the marble out. Understanding the history behind them now makes me feel a little ashamed.
