Isn’t the myth that the village of Pity Me near Sunderland is where the monks carrying Cuthbert body to Durham, dropped him and the corpse said “ have pity on me” ? I prefer the simpler explanation that “Pity Me” is the anglicised corruption of the Norman French “ Petit Mere” , small lake Cheers.

That is correct mate, apparently the monks were fleeing from vikings, the legend also goes st cuthberts body hadn’t decomposed a decade after first being buried,or so we were told at school. Not saying him or his corpse never spent a night or two there, just saying where he is buried (Durham Cathedral) and where he was buried before that (Lindisfarne).
