Is that in south yorkshire by any chance ? its said he laid here before been moved up to Durham cathedral for his funeral

Didn’t he die on Farne islands and was initially buried at Lindisfarne before being moved to Durham Cathedral?I went to school in Sunderland and we went to Durham Cathedral a few times.

Isn’t the myth that the village of Pity Me near Sunderland is where the monks carrying Cuthbert body to Durham, dropped him and the corpse said “ have pity on me” ?

I prefer the simpler explanation that “Pity Me” is the anglicised corruption of the Norman French “ Petit Mere” , small lake 👍

Cheers.

That is correct mate, apparently the monks were fleeing from vikings, the legend also goes st cuthberts body hadn’t decomposed a decade after first being buried,or so we were told at school.

....so are you saying he wasn't in Lancashire?

Not saying him or his corpse never spent a night or two there, just saying where he is buried (Durham Cathedral) and where he was buried before that (Lindisfarne).
