Good morning guys.

I'm looking to buy a camera for me & the wife for this coming year. A don't want to be breaking the bank.  But would like something that will take good images of animals & surround areas. Could zoom in to say length of a football pitch away & great at close up images. Say for instance a bullfinch up on the feeder 10 yards away nice and clear images. I'm thinking cannon but not seen any cheap lol few thousand some I've seen. Thanks for reading.

Generally Canon DSLR camera`s now come in 3 versions, Crop frame, Full frame and Mirrorless. Disregard Mirrorless as they are too expensive, Next we have the Full frame cameras such as the 6D and 5D along with the 1DX, Again disregard the 1DX series on price, The full frame camera 6D and 5D is in my opinion the most versatile, in as much as it is a general allrounder capable of portrait's to landscaped to wildlife. As the image has not been cropped it then makes it better quality if cropped again using picture editing software. The last version is the crop sensor cameras like the 7D and most of the cheaper canon`s, These are the cameras that are generally used for sports and wildlife photography. What a crop sensor does put simply is increase the size of the image by 40% so if you are using a 200 lens then on a crop camera the focal length will effectively be 280,

The next thing is the type of lens you intend to use with the camera, Cheap lenses will drive you mad. In my opinion the L series of lenses are the only ones to buy unless you are after a specialist lens. In your case a 100 to 400 or a 70 to 200L IS USM would probably be a good choice,

So depending on your budget then i would go for a second hand 5D mkiii (£400 to 500) or a 7D mkii (£300 to £400) and a 70 - 200 is usm lens ( £500 ish) If these are out of your budget look at Lower range of cameras like the 800D but still put money into the lens,

My son is currently doing GCSE photography. We bought him a Nikon, simply because that's what his school advised as it's the ones they use. I think it's a D3200? Do you know if they're any good? Re the zoom/telephoto lens; which would be best to pair with it for wildlife photography? I think he has two lenses but they're a general purpose one and a makro as he was into his close-up work when we bought it.

here are some photos taken with nikon d3200(not mine), if you click on a photo it'll tell you what lens was used, sigma/tamron 150-600mm would be a good starting zoom lens

I have little to no experience with Nikon cameras, I do know that there lenses tend to be more expensive than the same lens is from Canon. I have put a link to lenses for that camera,

Take a look at the panasonic bridge cameras, serious zoom and pretty waterproof.

I could not agree more I have the Panasonic Lumix FZ150 and love it. I had it years it has a 24x optical zoom which I think is equivalent to 600mm.

Thanks paddylike and paulus.

I've saved those links and I'll show them to my son later. Or I might treat myself to a lens and ask him if I can borrow his camera.😁

I used to have a panasonic lumix bridge camera too. I think it's the one I used to take the photo of Rusty in my avatar. I loved it but I decided to trade it in to London Camera Exchange when we bought Oscar's Nikon. The things we do for our kids.😇

I have a D3100. I think I bought it a week before the 3200 came out. Mine is decent, and very rugged. I would suggest one of the Nikkor kit zooms in at least 300mm.
