Hi Toolbox,...the term is not 100% accurate today, but was one that I coined when I used to pen a few articles for various Sporting papers..

In the 1980's the lurcher scene was different to today, and there seemed to be a plethora of written works on the subject of Lurchers, Terriers and Ferrets. . 

I kinda got drawn into commentating, on certain matters,..although I was just a humble rabbiter,..and certainly not a Field Sports writer

My own take on the whippets, at that time, was influenced by a trip my pals made to the North of England, to race their Whippets. 

We all kept 'Sunday morning' type rabbit dogs, fleet of foot and plenty fast enough to catch bushed or ferreted rabbits.

Our stock were Kennel Club, Pedigree based , leggy and svelt, real pretty wee things..

However, during that fateful trip oop' North, our eyes were opened, big time...

When we entered our dogs, into the racing, we pretty soon noticed that our competion all had a distinct Bull Terrier demeanour..

They were physically, streets ahead of our cony catchers,..some of them were even sporting six packs !

Predictably, we were well beaten in every race,.in fact, we could not even come last....

Hence my own phrase, where I started calling these new improved, non-pedigree specialist racing dogs,...Hard Bloods....

My great, late friend, Lt. Col. E.G Walsh (the author of the ground breaking work, "Lurchers and Longdogs") could never understand my term and always prefered to go with Dutch Salmon ,the American Sight Hound enthusiast's choice, of 'Hot Blood' or Cold Blood to describe, non-pedigree Greyhounds and suchlike.

As for my choice of Blue or Red Heeler, I've actualy used both colours, and found no difference in the lurcher hybrids that they produce..

My main concern when using any pastoral breeding across a running dog,..is Temperament......

"As in all things, human and canine, Temperament is King"....

Interesting info that Phil they are a strong type that you had all them years ago real hardy types which by the looks wouldn’t be in sick bay too often  Atb taffey
