shovel leaner 7,650
I’ve been given a load of old bullets by a friend a while back . I’ve used the old Winchester’s but I’m not liking the RWS they don’t load or cycle well in my Tikka and when I tested them the majority grouped well , but there was the odd flyer . They to be fair have some age to them , and there is a grease on them which is quite hard . Just after a bit of feedback from you guys that actually use a 22lr , what rounds perform the best . I’ve seen an advert for Norma 22lr ammo , has any tried these because I rate their stuff , but I think it’s made in the states under license. Quote Link to post
Gav 1,708
Cci subs I use, don't know about cycling in an auto as mines bolt, but I find them consistent in mine. 3 Quote Link to post

When I said cycling I meant working the bolt . The RWS are hard to push in and extract , and sometimes they don’t extract the first or second time . I think it’s a lot to do with the age of the bullets and the ancient waxy substance they are coated in . I will try cleaning the bullets with some white spirit and see if that helps . But I am going to need to buy some new ammo soon so just wanted to know what was a good performing 22lr . Quote Link to post
villaman 9,982
I tried most 22 ammo and yes I have settled with Norma subs , accurate , quiet , loads smoothly and cheap , I paid £34.90 for 500 i have also changed over to Norma 17 for my tikka 17 HMR , once again very accurate beats everything else I have tried , but federal premium are very close 1 Quote Link to post

If the rws are difficult to push in and extract it’s because of the wax/grease that’s gone hard due to age. Norma .22 subs are rws .22 subs in a different box (lower consistency grade I’ve read, hence the price?) Over the years I’ve found eley and rws to be generally good, sk brilliant, but they’ve stopped making the hollow points. Most accurate are the decent target fodder, anything from club ammo upwards. These will group tightly at 100 yards and further if they suit your rifle, where the hollow points will struggle. 1 Quote Link to post
villaman 9,982
Well I have tried RWS and not good at all but Norma are , one hole groups at 75 yards and well within 20mm @ 100 yards Quote Link to post

FOXHUNTER 5,021
Interesting reading. I have always used Winchester subs but think I am due a change due to them being louder. Just read a review on the Norma and the article was based on shooting a Ruger 77/22 which I have , the results were very good. Also surprised that they are cheaper than Winchester , Eley and RWS. I just need to source some. Quote Link to post

I don’t know why they’re cheaper, neither does the gun shop, but I’ve read somewhere that they’re rws lower grade ammo and that’s the reason for the pricing. If this is true or not I don’t know? I haven’t tried the norma’s, but we looked at them in the shop and they looked the same as the rws subs. Both distributed by ruag ammotec..... Quote Link to post
villaman 9,982
May be made by RWS but I can tell you they far more accurate through my CZ 457 , mates CZ 455 and another mate Anschutz. it’s a bit like JSB makes different pellets for the likes of AA , falcon and many more 1 Quote Link to post
Sausagedog 7,381
When I tried the Norma in my Marlin they were trash! I'm reluctant to try them again but I've never had any issues with the new rws field line ammunition. I've always admired cci products and eley. Federal ammo is good but I don't think they do a sub sonic. I've gone off Winchester now but the laser is good. Quote Link to post
