What If Rabbits Could Kill You?

What's the obsession with owning a homicidal lurcher that will set about anything on four legs? If I wanted a dog to run a few bunnies the last thing I'd want is something that's going to fcuk off and set about sheep four fields away....

I think if you read back you will find that there isn’t an obsession mate ?

I don't think anyone is advocating owning a lurcher that isn't stock steady, although it's possibly more of an issue with the highly driven dogs....any dog can be a stock worrier...

Speak for yourself , I’ve seen one or two horse scarers  over the Years ??

what can you do ?

Who said anything about homicidal four fields away  for the record some of the best temperament I have seen have been bull xs calm round a kennel good to say and well behaved when brought up right  I can honestly say I have had more grief of other crosses in the van and out in the field the problem was a lot of numptys jumped on board and acted like they had a live bomb in there hands instead of a dog that just wanted to please but didn't know how to work such a dog

Yes mate .Owned several .From rabbit only dogs to all rounders to specialist types .Comes a time when you can’t do it all though and I gave up lurchers in favour of a rifle .Only bred one litter that fell far short of the parents .The little pat bull whippet was the best I had ,she was a mistake breeding to a mates bitch we never knew was in season .Back of the van shag without us seeing .
She would go to ground ,lamp all night ,work with the gun and ferrets as well as kill rats with the best of them .They say you only get one good dog in a lifetime but I’ve had two greats ,the little lurcher and Fly ,son of Razor that did everything asked in a long lifetime of work .Closely followed by a bitch called Willow and another called Holly which I still have although retired .Some more good dogs that just never stood out due to the fact decent stuff was commonplace back then .

Looking back there’s been more decent dogs but just sounds like I’m blowing smoke up my arse cos I bred them .?

What was plan fd on your line and how much outcrossing did you do I'm genuinely interested on how you decided what was worth pursuing and what wasn't and how close you bred

Bad enough when they stand on your foot ? seen a dog that had been kicked in the face by one a few years back, almost took its jaw off, cost the dogs owner over 2k to repair it, must be over 10 years back thinking about it.

Cheers, D.

And that's fair enough. I just don't value that 'gameness' exclusively or significantly above other traits. Any dog that displays any trait to an extreme level is nice to witness, but I want to see optimal balance ultimately. But I'm not a 'dogman', I'm a 'hunter'. They're not exclusive terms but it's the only way I can think to explain it.

I don’t know what a “dogman” is either mate.

I have certainly never been one, some lads are conditioners and some lads just want to chuck something out of a wagon or point it and it leathers things, some want to spend time and really love the dog.....all different people wanting and doing different things.

I genuinely don't see what a head banging lunatic brings to anything tbh. I've seen every ounce of that drive (when it matters) in dogs that aren't liabilities or particularly hard work.

What they bring is a smile to your face mate.

Dogs imho are much of a muchness, seen one semi decent dog seen them all type thing......but when you see that special thing that makes you “whoa!” .........that’s watching an apex predator at the top of its game.

At what point do you have 'enough' and start worrying about other traits?

I just think it's a shame to get so hung up on one single trait to the point it ends a man's hunting life.

I suppose the best comparison I can think of is this.

If all you could do was stalk roe with an air rifle or only shoot them from 5 feet away in a pen would you still hunt them ?

I bet the answer is no, just going out to f**k round is not enough....there’s no point to it.

You would buy a decent set of binoculars and just watch them instead.

What part of you did he connect with.

There was a dentist in the next village from me.peter his name was.but his nickname was Peter pain.you can imagine why lol.

Anyway a horse kicked him straight in the face.he was wearing glasses at the time and it really damaged both eyes.he had to give up being a dentist after that kick.
