Terminal performance...

Recommended Posts

.... always interests me when it come to bullets from rimfires.

For a while now I have had the notion that WMR hornady v max are not as explosive launched from this cartridge as they would say from hornet or greater.

I'm ok with it as I like two holes in critters.

My notion was confirmed somewhat via the forty yard squirrel and the lime tree stump today!

The vmax raked the full length of the squirrel and then partially buried it self in the tree stump. I dug it out and it although mashed was still for the most part together!

It'll be interesting how the HMR does!

I don't shoot many squirrels with my WMR, or HMR thinking about it.

My WMR almost exclusively runs on 30g V-Max, and my HMR on 17g V-Max.

Certainly there are times when the HMR goes clean through, but not to often on rabbits (depends where you aim and distance I guess) and even less on fox (VERY RARE, actually I can't remember it ever happening).

For quarry I use them on I find the expansion of both is pretty good, and terminal performance Very good, once hit with the HMR or WMR next to nothing runs off!

Remember the HMR is a bit faster than WMR.

Always great to see these recovery shots.

Issue is insufficient velocity.

The only practical way to maximise expansion is to experiment with different bullets. However, don't expect hydrostatic shock from .22. rimfire. Maybe time to test a range of ammo and a flesh target (or some dead rabbits) set against some water jugs (you want the same background to ensure anything passing through suffers the same expansion forces on the other side and water is probably the least likey medium to apply severe deformation forces (well this side of expensive ballistic gel), if you want to find the bullet which expands the most.

This is also where your new shiny hmr will buck the trend. Velocity is your friend for expansion and ultimately hydrostatic forces.

I don’t think you’d get that result on a squirrel with hmr v-max. More likely shrapnel inside or a mess of an exit, or probably both if the bullet ran full length of the squirrel. One thing I’d say about hmr v-max, absolute mustard on squirrels imo ?.

Edit to say, you’re right about the .22 v-max in a hornet load SD, the squirrel would be blown apart.

Issue!

I never said there was an issue.

It died, like everything else I drill with this rifle.

By issue I mean explanation. The only answer is going to be a softer or less resistive bullet head if you're seeking greater expansion with .22rf. That said, it did the job. :)

What is a bullet head? I always thought a bullet is a bullet and a cartridge head is the primer end!
