I have no experience with one so am not really qualified to make any kind of comment. How do the 20g rounds fair....that's what I would probably look to but I don't know really? I had a lot of ricochets when I used them, a lot worst than .22lr as well Quote Link to post

The hornet is a completely different animal to the HMR or any other rimfire come to think of it, this is only my opinion but any rim fire is capable of taking fox under 100 yards if used correctly and although the hornet been a small centre fire will take fox comfortably above 100 yards, I would always pick the .223,.243 etc over it 1 Quote Link to post

I was going get up first light Friday and today but gout returned Thursday night! Maybe tomorrow. Last night I had to go and park the car near the maize clamp and wait for a crow just so I could do something. I fell asleep in the car due to no sleep from the gout and awoke to birds all over the maize! Oh and I took a I guess 140yd shot at a woody with the wmr and got feathers only so the hmr definitely won this match You take it easy with that gout, you need something to occupy your mind when you can’t get out, I can send you some of the wife’s knitting patterns if you would like to learn a new skill 3 Quote Link to post

Stav is using a hmr A.K.A mouse gun. The only issue i have with hmr is i saw two foxes wounded one night with one and the lad was a good shot. It is a long story that i won't bother with but it put me off hmr for fox to the point that i won't let anyone use one that i invite to my permissions. Hornet of either calibre cannot be compared to hmr, one is rimfire the others are centre fire and bear no resemblance to each other. What i can tell you from experience is .17 hornet is marginal on fox at 200yds. Even with a well placed shot a runner is most likely the outcome. And the problem at 200yds with its bigger counterpart the .22 is you would need to know the exact holdover at that range due to its more pronounced curved trajectory. Fine in daylight very difficult to judge range at night. All of the above is why i will only shoot calibres with a flat trajectory, .204 is my chosen one and i have two of them. I would also shoot 22.250, .220 swift ( although a niche calibre ) or .243 using 55/58grn bullets. My own requirements may well differ from someone elses because i often have to take shots at extended ranges. Quote Link to post
Stavross 18,113
For me the .17hmr is a very useful tool around most of the small areas I shoot for fox, the .243 using 70g sako would always be my rifle of choice for fox ( with 90g sp’s for deer ) p.s. please don’t shoot at foxes with a hornet at 200 yards, especially a .17, that’s a bit far with quite a large margin for error Quote Link to post

Something I heard was that butter milk is a good thing to soak it in overnight to get that “rabbity” twang . Quote Link to post
Stavross 18,113
I used to eat loads of it with my old man when I was a lad but after years of gutting hundreds of them the smell put me right off, now doing them in salt water takes that just gutted smell away 2 Quote Link to post
