jiggy 3,209
Which are these they look like a wasp but small. They are nesting in my soffit with a nest bigger than a football but more of a blob than a sphere and it's not hanging it's just lying flat on inside of soffit. Will they go away themselves after a few weeks or do I have to go ninja style on them? Do they die off or hibernate and set up there again next year?

Deker 3,491
Its a wasp, I can't see what type from the picture, it does look a bit discoloured. If the nest it not causing you a problem leave it, many have already reached maturity and "gone", yours will soon, its getting a bit late in the season, but I have dealt with them until late November before. The fertilized females will hibernate and create a nest next year, if its viable they are the Queen, they may nest in the same area again, but not in the same nest. jiggy 3,209
Thanks lads there was a wasp nest in a cavity block in garden about 6 weeks ago. Not far from new nest, but they were much bigger twice the size and had more defining colours and were easily identifiable as wasp. I don't have any fear of wasps and even when they were swarming I just picked up the block and threw it in a barrel of water and closed the lid ,job done . This new nest is in a tight cubby hole in attic that if you crawled in to touch it you would be attacked and struggle to get a quick exit. There is an orchard next door so that's why they are around. If you take a bite out of them apples you better check for holes or you would have a very swollen tongue. There an early to ripe red apple where the soft flesh inside goes red as soon as they are ready. Fcuking wasps love burrowing into them.

You can go in b and q type stores and by a spray foam aerosol thing that you just spray on the nest it swells up around the nest like expanding foam and kills all the inhabitants, if the eu have,nt banned it yet

I have been called to deal with loads of nests after the owners tried! Edited October 8, 2018 by Deker

Greyman 32,041
Well I,m not a professional pest controller so don't have to pretend to people what an extremely difficult beast the wasp is to eradicate, and I,ve done loads and loads of nests for people free of charge with nothing more than 2 aerosol cans one to defend myself with as I expose the nest and the foam one to cover the nest once exposed, have never failed, or been stung and for the pesty,s worrying I,m stealing there lively hood I would,nt panic people like me who deal with there own shit are a dying breed, the new generation will be phoning you up to remove a spider from the bath soon so good days ahead 1

You had a nest to start with, so the original wasp thought it was a good place to make a nest, so will others. The fertilized females left that nest to hibernate and try and make it through the winter. Some of them may have not gone very far at all, so it is always possible one may make it back to the first nest site and start another nest.
