Grizzly Bear Hunting in the Lower 48

Recommended Posts

Quote

A judge on Thursday temporarily blocked the opening of the first grizzly bear hunts in the Rocky Mountains in more than 40 years, as he considers whether the government was wrong to lift federal protections on the animals.

US District Judge Dana Christensen's order came just two days before Idaho and Wyoming prepared to open the first grizzly bear hunting seasons in the Lower 48 states since 1974.

Saw this in the news this morning. Thought I'd chuck it up in GT to trigger a bit of hunting related debate. :whistling:

They obviously can't agree on figures so a proper census is needed before open season is allowed.

If there is significant doubt then I agree but I can't help but wonder if this has more to do with the politics of hunting than the facts of conservation.

Nonetheless, it's another conservation success story for the Americans. There was a video of a Grizzly in the Colorado Rockies last year that was a bit controversial because officially they are considered extirpated there.

I would have thought that between government and charity bodies they would over the last decade have got the numbers pretty bang on by now and if there was any doubt on how many bears were in that region there's no way hunting would be allowed. It looks to me like the judge is anti hunting.

Or maybe he's neutral and wants to keep things as they are? There's been no bear hunting there since the 70's?

Because the Grizzly population was in a bad way. Like the wolf population it is now at a level that will impact ranchers and ungulate populations. They're all totally protected in the National Park. The quotas are for surrounding lands where hunting is legal.

Limited harvesting will have minimal impact and can be adjusted annually in line with their conservation objectives.

This policy change has historical precedence with other species. For some reason Bears, specifically Grizzlies, are more outrageous to the public. "Charismatic megafauna" as Rinella calls them. British Columbia banned the hunting of them recently for no other reason than public emotion.

Moral of the story, don't run things  over.
