cant give it up

Recommended Posts

All though i have had some great shots with the FX Impact .25 FAC on rabbits , crows , pigeons , squirrels and targets , at 120 yards grouping with 16 pellets ,which is one mag came in at 26 mm .

But i seem to go back to sub 12 , just cant  give it up . Sub 12 is so much quieter and on some permissions i would not use FAC air , not only that its where it all began for me from the age of 13 some 45 years ago shooting a BSA meteor .22 and still have that gun today .

Any how waited for darkness last night ,which seems to take ages with clear skies and very bright moon  and that was about 10.20 pm . This newish permission is a 9 hole golf course , football pitch with other bits of land to it . Last night i concentrated on the golf course which had the most damage ,so came out the BSA Ultra .177 airtech tuned with a pulsar N870 LRF scope .

The first 4 rabbits shot at 43- 45 yards  , one at 51 , one at 60 then the last at 30 yards .

FAC air has its place but sub 12 is still hold its own !!

EVERY gun has a use, its simply about selecting the best gun/ammo combination for any job.

We don't always take out the .308, most of the time the jobs need something a lot smaller.  When I first started doing the supermarket/shop birds I used the FAC air, around 28ft lb, soon stopped that as even with the pigeons the shot commonly went clean trough and left holes in walls, so the lower power certainly has a use.

What ft lb is your FX running at and what type/weight of pellet do you use?   Fixed target distance is a general indication of rifle/pellet accuracy and 120 yards is a long way, and you seem to be getting half decent results, but what sort of arc do you get?

Cheers

Good session Mitch?

Think your right with there always being a place for sub 12, and it always puts a smile on my face when you pull off a stretcher!

Did you get a new x barrel with the impact or the standard smooth twist and buy a liner?! Just trying to suss out the shopping list.

Told you that you wouldn’t shelve the 12ft lb guns for long. When you first get the fac, you also get the novelty value of a new experience. After the initial massive grin factor fades a bit, you realise that they’re just different tools.? Good shooting ?

Si , when i started looking at the impact ASI did not have any X barrel guns in stock or barrels for them but Tony did say when the come in they will send a barrel down to me ,that was back in April  , i do keep phoning them and all i get is ,yes another 2-3 weeks .

FX impact you can have a 700 mm barrel now and they are coming out with a X slug barrel which meant to be fantastic .

Here is a little bit about it but i cant see them coming into our country for a few years if the X barrel is anything to go by

Impact is running about 905 fps (46.5 FT/LBS) with a jsb 25.4 gr pellet

Cant seem to copy a chairgun graph to show you the arc

Nice shooting Mitch  :good:.

The sub 12ft/lb rifles, ( for me), will " test you".

To hunt with a sub 12 air rifle is a specialised form of hunting, an art in itself.

The power limit we suffer and range limitations we suffer, requires a lot of field craft to remove this burden as best we can.

Getting to within 30/35 yards of your quarry is an art and to camouflage your movements is an art also.

Just the movement of a finger, a foot, an arm or head, etc, will alert your quarry.

Overcoming this, is why I`ve loved the art of hunting sub 12 ft/lb all these decades.

Those who are able to shoot at range will not have such burdens as movement of a finger, or leg at 120 yds and a lot further for powder burners, the " involvement" in that type of hunting, " for me", is missing greatly.

To take quarry with a spring, sub 12 ft/lbs rifle under 35 yds regularly, is without doubt, one of the " purest " forms of hunting, that will test you and your skills forever.

With respect to all styles of hunting,

                                                                          atb  Mark.

Had a few more last night but these two the best shots of the night . Head shot on a pigeon at 72 yards off the knee with FX impact and 72 yard rabbit off bipod with the ultra

Both went down and killed out right . Need to start recording my shots
