Woodburner project

Recommended Posts

I no it's getting warm and we should,nt need a fire, but every winter my man cave is a bit nippy to be out there all day making things so today I started making a little burner ready for next winter here,s the first bit will update as it goes for anyone interested so far total cost about£3 for the hinges and a couple of blades for the grinder, next for a ash pot and grill

I made one a couple of years ago for around a fiver. Put it in my little back extension.

It burnt really well - chucked out loads of heat, but the Health and Safety Nazis made me take it out !

Can't see them rivets lasting. Might be better with nuts and bolts tbh.

There's a thread on here somewhere with all the bumf ;)

Will those rivets take the heat?

It's a bit of a mock up just to get things going will give it a right good roasting later to see how they fair and if no good easy to put a couple of dabs of weld in, will also only be burning wood which does not reach the same tempature as coal, it's normally take 2 or 3 before I get it right but it's just nice being outside playing with boys things, I get a little stir crazy if I,m stuck in for any length of time ?

how do you seal around the door

It's only going in a shed so not that worried, if it needs it I,ll attach a flange and an adjustable air vent, but if it draws ok through the gaps I,ll leave it

I have been asked I think on here if I had a chimney sweeping certificate once, when I put one of those creosote logs in my fire to clean the flu , there are some truly sad people about mate

We used to leave the door open, and the heat from the extension kept the whole house warm ! F***ing neighbour grassed me up !

Some surveyor-type jobsworth came round from the council - "safety rules, need permission, duty of care" blah, blah.

"How can we know it's safe, for start ?" he said - "Because I'm not dead and my dogs have slept in here for two months with it burning" isn't an acceptable answer, apparently !

Why can't people mind their own business these days ?

I have two other woodburners in other places and normally only close the doors if they are spitting badly or I,m going out or to bed, but I,ll give this one a go open and closed better to test it to destruction before I fit it in the shed ?

Little update on project woodburner, have chopped up a large road sign and made a hearth stuck half a dozen boiler flues together and fired the beast up been burning for a few days, rivets seem to be doing ok although I did replace a few in less accessible places but looked at a few cheap commercial models that use rivets for door hinges etc, there is no adjustable air draft, if the door is open it burns a treat if the door is shut it goes straight out so for the princely sum of a fiver I won't have to freeze my nads off in the smoking shed every winter
