'Online abuse hell' won't stop anti-hunt campaigner's fox-hunting fight

Rhyl grandmother Judith Hewitt says 'insult trolls' will never silence her

Judith Hewitt has suffered online abuse because of her anti fox

A leading anti-hunt campaigner says she will not give up her fight against fox hunting despite the daily online abuse she receives.

Only last Thursday Ivor Derek Wilkinson was sentenced to 28 days for saying he would put a bullet in Judith Hewitt.

The 49-year-old appeared at Llanelli Magistrates Court having previously pleaded guilty to three counts of sending offensive messages on Facebook to Judith Hewitt.

Wilkinsons threat to the Rhyl woman is far from isolated.

The grandmother-of-two, who is in her 60s, said: The abuse from the pro-hunting lobby started in 2014. Comments vary from that I should be shot, raped or be sent to a gas chamber.

Ive also been told that Im a nutter, a mad Welsh woman and so on. I try not to look at the comments any more as they are just too painful.

The former professional singer, who is married to Bob Hewitt, said her campaigning against fox hunting with dogs began in 1991 when she witnessed a fox-hunt with hounds.

The poor fox was surrounded by hounds and I felt the animals panic and terror.

I became actively involved when I saw live fox cubs being dug out of their burrow and thrown into a crowd of hounds, it was horrific.

This is why no matter what abuse I get Ill carry on campaigning.

Animals dont have a voice but we do, so thats why some of us stick our necks out.

She has however been forced to take measures to protect the home she shares with her husband as she lives in constant fear that those who oppose her views will target her property.

Our letterbox is fitted with a fire retardant, weve got CCTV cameras and our house is marked by the police, in case there is trouble.

But despite this she has no regrets about being so vocal in her opposition to fox hunting: Ive no idea if Ive made a difference or not, although I think because Im quite a high profile campaigner Ive raised awareness of the issues involving fox hunting.

Nevertheless the unrelenting abuse has taken its toll personally on Mrs Hewitt.

She said: I take myself off on long walks up in the hills and that seems to help but its hard not to dwell on the way a certain type of troll behaves.

The internet describes an insult troll as a pure hater. Those targeting me for over three and half years have been so severe that I can only describe them as serious cyber crime
