Dog owners are being urged to be wary after men reporting to be dog wardens called at a home attempting to seize a pooch.

In an incident on Monday afternoon, July 24, two men called at a home in the Newtownkelly area of Coalisland, Co Tyrone , and said they were there to 'seize a dog' living in 'unfit conditions'.

The resident who did not wish to be named told Belfast Live their suspicions were immediately raised and when they asked the men for ID they refused.

The dog owner said: "They were claiming to be the dog warden and said that our dog was living in unfit conditions and they were there to seize it.

"When we asked them to show ID they refused and they had no uniform, and were driving an unmarked van.

"They parked the van at the top of the hill away from the house. They also said they would call back to the house at 6pm but they didn't.

"We have phoned round today to see if the dog was reported and no one has heard of them before so we are certain it's fake.

"We just want to warn everyone to keep an eye out round your homes, I don't know if they where trying to steal the dog or just snooping around the house but something strange was going on."

A spokesman for the Mid Ulster District Council confirmed that the incident had been reported to them.

The incident was also reported to PSNI.

The gypsies were in my area the other day. They were looking at my mates ma's dogs which were in her garden. Then they put a white mark on her fence. They have been known to do this around here, they would then come back at some Stage and steal your dogs

Fella knocked on my door a while back asking me did I have any scrap metal I wanted rid off. I told him to get the fk. Few days later another one came looking to know did I want the pvc cleaned. I asked him was he fking blind as I'd just done mine and the next door neighbours pvc. So I told him to get the fk as well. Went in and sat down and thought about it. So I couldn't help myself. Drove over to the gypsy camp got out and they all stood looking at me. I said where's the boss man. Went over to his caravan and told him where I lived and the crack and if anything went missing I'd have the place wrecked and they wouldn't be able to get as much as a packet of fags or a pint of milk from any of the shops close by as they'd be barred from them all. Must have worked because not one c""t has been back since.

There's 2 camps within a mile of me but I haven't had any bother other than that. Thing is they're not the only dog thieves about doggie men steal dogs and doggie men buy stolen dogs there lies the problem because there's a market for them. That Coalisland is full off them, I wouldn't trust many of the locals either never mind the tinkers lol.

I suppose it's where ya live but I would massively sway too disliking that kind.A few months back i got a knock on the front door a tinker man selling knifes while this was going on the misses was hanging out washing and another came round the back. Having a good nose about only for she was their. They were told leave obviously but I didn't want too look too eager incase they would have read me like a book knowing some valuables where on the propertie incase they returned. It's just been one step ahead a the feckers is the hard part.
