springfield 20
After some advice I own a 22month lurcher bitch. She's not yet came into season and is very immature. Has anyone had a bitch go longer than this and do they mature mentally after there first season. Thanks in advance Quote Link to post
Wild-Bill 500
My lurcher bitch has her first season last august and she was about 27 months old. She was very immature till then she's much more level headed now and reaped the rewards this season. Bear with it mate I would say she will have a season this summer. Quote Link to post

desertbred 5,490
i have known bitches over 3 not have a season some working bitches sometimes have sporadic seasons missing several cycles. Yet other bitches known them to come in 8/9months old and be regular as clockwork every 6 months after that. As for maturing after first season had a ouple were immature all their lives, . If your concerned have her checked out by a vet . otherwise just let nature take its course some times having it round other bitches in season will bring it in. skycat 6,174
Had one lurcher bitch not come in season until she was nearly 4. After that she had yearly seasons. Nothing wrong with her, and had 2 litters out of her. 2 Quote Link to post

dog man 176
Nothing to worry about season will come in it's own time ensure she has all the vitamins she needs and fit and it will happen sometimes prior to come in heat they could go off there food and loss condition then heat will come all true what all the other lads have said just keep her in condition as I had a bitch came in season for 2 days and next season lost her condition badly after that all seasons ok bitches are funny things lol. TOMO 28,498
yep i here the same thing mate,,,an old greyhound trainer i used to control moles for told me the same,,,he told me it was especialy true in long distance racers,,,he said it wasnt uncomon for them to not come in season till they finished racing,, when they got a bit of fat on them,,, not sure why a distance animal would be any difrent,,, intrestingly,,female human athaleats that have a low bodyfat,,often dont have periods,,,so perhaps the low bodyfat and fittnes thing it true,,, Quote Link to post
springfield 20
Do you find they mature a lot after there first season Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
Having their first season is a stage in the development of the bitch. But it won't necessarily alter her attitude a lot. If she has a certain temperament, mind set, that is her. Just because the dam may have been a first class working bitch doesn't always mean that those traits will be passed on to her offspring. It's not just the parents you need to look at when breeding lurchers, but the grand parents and even further back. Genes are funny things, and you could, for example, throw back to a dumb or less able dog way back in the line. Unless you have created your own line from scratch, paying very close attention to putting in the traits you want, many lurcher litters are a lucky dip, a lottery as we seldom know all the ancestors or what their temperaments were like.
