One of the places i do is a large free range chicken set up and from time to time they have problems with foxes ,well all the time really but nothing like this .Due to the bird flu thing ,all chickens are in for 30 days and the local fox population must be suffering chicken withdrawal having snaffled all those unfortunate chicken to be locked out when the shut down occured .He checks the birds almost hourly as the climate in each shed is not set up for 24 hour bird lock down .Anyway 5 days ago he came upon a fox trying to bite the side of a shed middle of the day and phoned me straight away .That night we lamped the place but saw only a very lamp shy fox that was gone in a flash ,literally.Next day different shed ,fox had dug under what they call the shelter pen or rain scratch but couldnt get into the main shed but had caused such a panic, farmer picked up 567 dead hens !!!!!!! smothered .Now the phone call takes on a different tone .Its all un paid for me so he bites his tongue a bit and asks for suggestions .I suggest snaring but hes not keen as last time i killed 4 hares before i got the rogue fox and hes passionate about his hares .I tried all known earths nearby with a terrier to no avail and lamped for 2 more nights seeing only this shy critter which has to be the one .Thursday he relents and says snare the bugger so over i go ,day off work especially to set 17 wires on all the usual runs .That night nothing but another shed is attacked but no fatalities .These birds are older due to go out if the flu hadnt been looming so i guess theye;d seen it all before .I block up all the gateways and bush any hole in hedges to maximise the chance of a catch and bingo ,this mornings phone call was a relief .Id caught two ,a dog and vixen both dispatched and taken to the farmer to see .He goes in doors and comes back with a role of notes which i decline but he insists .I do the vermin here purely for the ratting when sheds are moved and work for the dogs but appreciated the xmas box of £200 .

Yes mate .He has a full time rat man for the farm assured bollocks but its me he calls when theres a problem .Years ago we killed 276 foxes off this place in one year with subsequent years falling rapidly in numbers but now the numbers are manageable ,even acceptable .His previous manager would rather chase skirt than look after the birds and husbandry was terrible with dead stock everywhere .Paradise for a foxing team but nightmare for finance .

close to me there is a very large free range chicken farm and the chap there snares a lot of foxes he tells me that its a constant stream and never lets up,he,s been doing this for years , his place is in the middle of the Quorn Friday country so foxes are tollerated to some extent but not on his patch and it amazes me how many it draws in over a year. Anyway, well done on the snaring.

I could snare a lot more too but I only go when he he gets a problem on a large scale .The chicken locked out on a regular basis are expected to be taken but causing a large scale kill is another thing altogether in his books .
