kanny 21,753
From what I've seen their best use is within city limits on a small scale. I can see this increasing, but replacing the general car I just can't see it myself....When I was a kid we thought we would all have hover cars now!...haha Modern electric cars are getting ranges of 3-400 miles now, that sort of level will make them very practical for everyday folks. Further improvements in battery tech and production I can definitely see them replacing the internal combustion engine. And like anything once they make big investments on production the price will come down... Look at flat and curved screen tvs now cheep as chips

I am seeing more on driveways with the cables running through the house windows on charge. I think that will be the other big obstacle, having the facilities to charge everywhere, whenever......but it will come gradually & also less need to charge frequently.A majority crossover to electric I think is still a very long way off though...........obviously certain countries will be a lot quicker than others. Imagine how long it would take the US for example. Edited November 30, 2016 by Accip74

There was a article on the radio yesterday about they want nation wide coverage of quick charge points at petrol stations within the next 5years.. 10 minutes for a full charge. The oil companies like Shell, BP etc would buy the hardware and lease them through their stations. Rather than having to wait on your car to charge it would be a simple case of nip in to the station with your low unit and chop it in for a charged one. It'd require industry regulations and standards but would mitigate the practicality issues. Anyway, oil! Is there any chance of trump banging sanctions back on Iran?

Wow! 10 mins that better than I thought. I can see Scandinavian countries or somewhere like japan getting on it quick, but America, Russia....China etc that will take take some doing! C556 351
We'll see how the Iranian nuclear deal fares under Trump. If that falls apart and restrictions are placed on Iranian oil exports, you'll see the price jump.

Tbh I think they will eventually do away with the battery all together going along the lines of a wireless inductive system built along or into the road itself. ..looks like Tesla was on to somthing lol ...wireless charging is already here http://www.theverge.com/2015/7/29/9065983/qualcomm-wireless-car-charging-brusa
stumfelter 3,034
I think a good idea for electric cars would be to have grooves down the middle of the road and a projection on the front of cars to fit into the groove to keep them centralised, this would allow brass strips to be fitted to the roads and the cars could gather electricity by the use of copper brushes underneath the cars connecting to the brass strips. I think this could also lessen boy racers as the cars could be light and if they tried cornering too fast I'd imagine they'd lose the back end and invariably spin off. MickC 1,825
I work Offshore and it's the lads who are working in the industry that are being hit, zero hour contracts, different rotas, paying them off and bringing them back on agency's and paying them less for doing the same job,and the list goes on.The Company's are still making money hand over fist. Not mentioning no names but the Company that owns the rig that I'm on made 4.1 billion profit last year and 5.2 billion this year,so much for the downturn !!! Company's are using this alleged downturn to drive wages and operating costs down as far as they can, whilst still making record profits.
