philpot 4,928
I bought one last year but didn't fancy paying silly money and bought one from ebay for £83, to be honest it looks just like a Hawke 400 and possibly made in the same factory and does a fine job for me. There is also one which does night rangefinding with a few guys on AGF using them http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231883983135?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I try to estimate distance but not too good at it and test myself using the rangefinder as part of the learning curve but in truth very happy to stick with a rangefinder and worth every penny as far as I am concerned. RSVNelly 518
If you get a chance to read some of the Army fieldcraft books there's some tips and pointers for judging distance. It'll explain things like how looking into the Sun or up hill will effect your perception of distance. A good little book is the sniper pocket book ?? mark williams 7,549
Use of a range finder is a " must do " to attain perfect shot placement. First of all though, you must have a "perfect zero". In .22 cal I work to a 27 yard zero and this keeps the .22 pellet " within " a 1 inch kill zone from 6.9 yds to 31.1 yds. After that distance hold over is required and a range finder and knowing your mill dots will give you excellent shot placement. In .177 cal I work to a 38 yard zero, this keeps the .177 pellet " within" a 1 inch kill zone ( thumb nail), from 9.7 yards to 38 yds. After that distance the mill dots and range finder come into force. I couldn`t agree more with the statements about field craft and practicing your shooting . atb Quote Link to post
