I meant first you travel 50 miles, then 100, then 200 just to get big bags, then wonder why next time you have to go further? What happens when you can't go any further and still can't find any big numbers?

Some lads fish..want the big fish..it's a hobby..a life chose. Don't waste the money on drink or fags but the chase..it's what they do..I only ever see folk moan when they catch f**k all..I see more posts on how big will my dog grow than descent comments on lads doing the job..

My point is there are fewer big bags available locally precisely because people are taking such big bags.

 

Of course I understand people's hobbies/choices, but if the fishermen you talk about killed and ate all the big carp they caught, then moaned there were no big carp local to them.... see what I'm saying?

But the lads go 3 hours away to give the place 2 hours away a rest. Then they go 4 hours away to give the place 3 hours away a rest. Then they jump on ferry and go elsewhere.

 

They aren't mindless idiots just wiping land out.

 

TJones took me a belting spot ferreting. We did 50 odd bunnys. He says he's been going the same place once a year for as long as he can remember. He just goes once a year and always gets similar bag.

 

There's not a lack of rabbits around them because they've hammered them. They just don't thrive the same in some areas. Nobody has done 100 rabbits around here, it's not a new thing. It's not like 10 years ago you could get 100 and now you can't.

i think lads doing big numbers are putting the shift in day and night,and good on them,they want to see the bunny population remain high so they can keep going at them,so they like to harvest them ,it gives room for more to come on,otherwise some fella would gas them if out of control

Must be really short of food to take all those rabbits, unless there is still hundreds of rabbits still about.

Surely it's about testing man and dog? Pushing that bit further.

 

Plus when you're travelling 3-4 hours plus (each way) why aren't you going to make the most of it?

 

A good feat without a doubt, but ever wonder why they have to travel so far? How long before it's 6 hrs or more travelling? Rabbits are not an infinite resource. A hard winter, vhd, mixie all take their toll. Remember Malham, used to be good.

Some of my best permission was at the back of Malham tarn,the fields used to lift and run down warrens,literally.Now its a much harder and far less rewarding slog.The fencelines and rabbit box,s ruined my permission.When the farmers wanted rabbits killing we used to hang the surplus over the walls to rot,you can only shift so many.52 weeks a year i used to cover permission in the Dales,if id have left it the farmer would have found a more committed soul at the next knock on his door.It took 7 years to sicken me of the waste and ive never found the urge for bunnys since,i still like to see the lads about that put a dent in the bunny population and get the numbers,id rather see a dog doing the job before a gun,snare or box.

Some of us have to travel -120 miles just to get about 10 good runs and in enjoy the the hard bunnys local as much as the easier ones in certain places .. it's nice to see a dog adapt to different terrains .. it's just about giving the amount of work that YOU want to .. no one wants to wipe them out but if you don't run them you can guarentee someone else will be ..

We all have different ambitions for our dogs and should all respect each other where all in it for the same reason at the end of the day .. just to watch these dogs do what they enjoy .. agreed Morton ??
