Read Tysons book real good read, it sort of leaves you with the impression that we never saw the finished article and only seen damaged goods after the loss of his mentor a Cus, had all his stars been in line and Cus lived ten more years.

 

I grew up watching Tysons rise and seen his fall but even after all that n documentaries etc the book was a real eye opener, amazing just how far he got as a car crash he was from loosing Cus, amazing fighter, lived some life now a lot more humble for it too

We will never know how good Tyson could have been if damato lived longer but I believe he would have been even better for much longer if damato hadn't passed away. I still believe Tyson at his best would have beaten any man at their best in a boxing match.

You can't facto in how good someone "could" of been for all we know he may have been worse if damato hadn't died and if you judge someone on potential then the greatest boxer of all time judging by potential is probably someone who no one has ever heard of that got injured/killed/went to prison or simply never even went through the ropes you can only go off what happened and in Tyson's case he wasnt a dominant champ and wouldn't have been in any era from what we saw.

I didnt factor into how good he 'could' have been i said we will never know (just like you did) but I BELIEVE he would have been better i never said that it was a fact. I also don't believe he is the greatest heavyweight of all time as more than one fighter had better careers imo. I do believe that Tyson on his best night would have beaten anyone else on their best night in a boxing match. I am only a part time fan and don't claim to be any kind of expert but that is my opinion and there is no way anyone can ever prove it wrong. People can disagree all they like and that will only be their opinion and atvb to them.

We will agree to disagree on the count How many fighters since have been counted out still with all there senses but getting the timing of the count wrong ? Chisoras American opponent springs to mind.

Tyson came along when the Heavyweight division was stagnant with no stand out fighters,even Spinks was just a pumped up Light Heavy.He was a like a breath of fresh air for boxing as he marched through all his opponents and title fights before the Douglas fight destroying nearly everybody he faced with raw power and agression.Everybody loves a ko specialist who just goes in there and dismantles opponents in brutal fashion and this is what made Tyson so popular and also what gave him his invincable aura.However at the same time Manny Steward from the Kronk gym said that even though Tyson had achieved so much at a young age that he would burn out and whichever way you look at it and for whatever reasons this is what happened to Mike Tyson.For a few years Tyson was the dominant fighter of the heavyweight division,some other ATG never dominated the Heavyweight division but are still regarded as ATG so yes I do rate Tyson. As for people saying how he would have fared facing other fighters like Ali,Marciano,Louis,foreman etc etc is all just speculation as these fights never happened so who knows what the out comes would have been.

Good post Mick...i often think that those that totally disregard Tyson as a fighter werent following his career closely at the time...but judge him on the media bullcrap that came after...Chisora's american opponent that "miss-timed" the count was Malik Scott...the same cheating weasel that took a blatant dive against Wilder...but funny how we've got from Golovkin to Tyson...i remember starting a thread on here last year when Murray fought Golovkin...only a few seemed to of heard of him...now everyones an expert...funny how it goes eh?

Yes it is funny, the man had call it 4 years out of the sport. It's amazing he came back and won the title tbh, whatever was left of him after Douglas was written off with the prison sentence.

I am not sure but I think I sang golovkins praises on that thread, does that make me a bona fide expert? Lol I am no expert but back then or now if you saw GGG fight you don't have to be an expert to know he is a rare talent.

I think that would have been some fight. The sheer will of both would have made it an interesting match to me and I cannot see a clear winner. Golovkin seems a slightly better balanced athlete might just give him an edge but I would never, ever bet against Calzaghe.
