MickC 1,825
For anybody interested in what Jack Johnson had to go through/put up with during his career there is a two part documentary on Discovery on the PBS channel tonight (ch 534) Its called Jack Johnson : unforgivable blackness, the first part is back on again at 12:30 am. You will never watch a more disgraceful documentary about any boxer in History with what happened to him and others around him. It culminated in the President of America banning the film of his victory over the White unbeaten former champion Jeffries. Cheers for the heads up Mick...love this kinda stuff...its on again tonight so have set to record it...in regards to the way Johnson was treated...to quote the great Jem Mace...it was "other times other manners"...Johnson would have to be another candidate for the title of 'Greatest'...Bob Fitzsimmonds too...names now being lost to time...along with the previously mentioned Mr Mace the 'Father of Modern boxing'..who played a major part in forging the sport as it is today. Ali thought he had it hard lol, just watch what Johnson went through. It was the wily old Johnson who showed Schmeling how to beat Louis in there first fight.

He was joking around saying how crazy Johnson was to basically go against the establishment so boldly, doing things that black men would only dream about in such racist times. MickC 1,825
Lads just watch both parts of the documentary Jack Johnson: Unforgiveable Blackness, the safest place for him was inside the ring fighting. It's unreal how people went on with him and how many blacks got killed in race riots after he beat Jeffries. To Jeffries credit he did say " I could never have beat Johnson even on my best day" Johnson kept trying to get a fight with Joe Louis but but was rebuffed for being to old, however Johnson had seen a big flaw in Louis game and when he could not get the fight with him he went to Schmelings camp and told him how to beat him and beat him he did.

Can't believe there hasn't been a movie on the man, done right it could be a great film.....
jukel123 9,290
Jack Johnson paved the way for black fighters. He was a courageous guy. He used to play with white fighters, shaking his head when they managed to land a decent shot, laughing, taunting and applauding them in a mocking way. The audiences of white guys would be baying for his blood but he remained cocky and 'in your face'. Bundini Brown used to shout 'Jack Johnson's ghost in the room' to encourage Ali when he was in the ring. In other words Ali was a kind of successor to Johnson, taking all the racist shit society could throw at him and laughing it off. Johnson in America's eyes was guilty of 'unforgivable blackness'. Johnson couldn't give a f**k, put two fingers up to America and hung around with and married white women. Ali ,on the other hand ,preferred black women -lots of them. I've never understood anybody preferring one race of women to another. To me there's stunners from all races. Check out these interviews Marciano and Ali-both very fair assessments of each others' abilities. Edited July 16, 2016 by jukel123

Not a bad watch that...preferd the first part not really interested in the (ugly) white women he shagged...Jeffries should of fought him before he retired maybe a different fight 5 years before?...you can say the same about the willard fight it was an old Johnson that Willard beat...noticed the old style English bull Johnson had running about in some of the footage(i notice stuff like that lol)...yep hard to believe its never been made into a movie...nearest from that era hollywoods done justice to was Russel Crowe in Cinderella man
AKA-BRINDLE 879
J Check out these interviews Marciano and Ali-both very fair assessments of each others' abilities. Theres also a video on youtube where Ali says he thinks he would of beat Marciano...but that he wouldnt of knocked him out it would of gone the distance...the nearest Marciano got to fighting a fighter like Ali was Archie Moore...Moore was Ali before there was Ali he was a flamboyant showman who courted the press...he even tried the rope-a-dope with Marciano in the early rounds...but it didnt work out for him with Rocky swarming all over and landing...when Joe Frazier was asked if he could of beat Marciano he said it wouldnt be fair to say...or compare different eras...i think thats about right

gnasher16 31,346
Theres always been connections between fighters/trainers and gamedogs one that springs to mind was the gr sire of Limeys Tug who was owned by Marvin Haglers trainers... closer to home Ricky Hattons former trainer was brother of the old Pit Bull News editor Joe Graham.....few other well known fighters had a healthy respect for a game dog.
