The biggest problem were having is keeping it warm constantly - have to remember to re-heat the wheat bag thingy...... A reptile heat mat with a thermostat might be worth getting. Can be picked up quite cheap online or you might find someone giving one away locally on Facebook Do NOT put a thermo mat on the base of the box, always put it on the side, so that the animal can choose its own heat range... A thermo mat should only cover half the base,heat rises,then the occupant can move away from direct heat if it wishes to.When I kept reps ,thought heat mat covered third of the Viv , inside a wooden Viv ,and underneath a glass one. Reps had a base heat plus an heat lamp set to a designated area,rock etc,above,thus 2 heat sources.When I had leopard geckos they just had the heat mat,bearded dragons had uv strip and basking spotlight. For those who gave me advice (and anyone else interested), the Hoglet made 100 grammes this morning ! Obviously, we don't see it much during the day, but it's mooching around well during the night. Blackbriar 8,569 Posted July 3, 2016 Author Report Share Posted July 3, 2016 UPDATE.....UPDATE.....UPDATE We've ascertained that he is a male and we weighed him last night......280g ! =O Local rescue centre says we can choose to release him now (big thumbs down by the missus) or make sure he gets up to hibernation weight, box him up for the winter and release next spring - which seems to be the favoured plan. 5 Quote Link to post Share on other sites
Greyman 31,418 Posted July 3, 2016 Report Share Posted July 3, 2016 The good lady BB has been feeding a baby hedgehog for a day or three, in the garden, just leaving water and a bit of dog food out for it. Yesterday morning, she found it cold and very weak, on the path. At first , she thought it was dead, but it began to move as it warmed up in her hands. She couldn't leave it to die, so it's residing in a small cage on top of the freezer. She feeding a small amount of goats milk, mashed up puppy food and mealworms. She heats up one of those wheat bag things to keep it warm, and it seems to be doing OK, though it's only around 4 inches long, so it's probably only a few weeks old. I've done the usual Google-ing, but would appreciate advice from anyone who's had experience of rearing and releasing - she doesnt want to take it to a rescue centre, if she can do it herself...... . I reared one some years ago called it Heidi hog, I can't remember the weight figures, but it has to be more than X amount of grams or it will die during hibernation, think it was 600,but could of been 300 I would check, mine was a real runt and took a bit of a beating from the dog so I had to keep it awake all winter it just lived under the kitchen cupboards and used a litter tray, but as a meat eater it did kick off a pong I treated it's wounds with honey which is an antiseptic and about the only way to treat them as you just pour it on, hope that helps a little good luck Quote Link to post Share on other sites
ratbuster 808 Posted July 3, 2016 Report Share Posted July 3, 2016 My wife raised two very small ones two years ago. Stable diet of catfood and hard-boiled eggs and mashed mealworms. Had them hibernate in the greenhouse in a cat basket stuffed with dry leaves. Made it safe and sound into the new year and in spring they left to live in our garden. Sadly they were both killed by a beech marten, of which we have more then wanted, but hé, fully protected...... The more I see beech martens, the less I see hedgehogs.... makes one think (apart from all the road rage casualties) 4 Quote Link to post Share on other sites
