gnasher16 31,602
It's funny how people see games different, I thought Rooney played midfield like a number 10 put in mid field ! Lol His range of passing is as good as ever of course, those diagonal balls are as good as you will see but he got hunted down a few times facing our own defence and lost out, he also struggled to put his foot in a bit and players went round him.....Jmho but you have to be able to hold the ball and you have to be able to put yourself about in that position and I don't think he did. Of course when the years are gaining, playing high up can be risky but when you are in your prime it's the way forward because you should have the legs to get back in shape if it breaks down. All just my opinion mate. Yep i get that......though i think playing next to a lad like that Dyer kid gives us the best of both worlds.....well thats the plan i think.......i dont think sides really have those Bryan Robson type of all round midfielders anymore do they its either a ball player like Rooney or a holding player like the other lad again it seems we,ve gone the continental way with that.......i do think sides will always try to isolate your ball player when they get the opportunity i guess its just how well his mate can protect him thats just how teams play nowadays dont they ?......ive said before though im no strategist i might be talking nonsense to someone whos played the game
WILF 51,082
If I was Coleman I'd be telling my players to get after Rooney lively when he is in possession facing his own goal deep, I would not give him a minute to turn......I think he will make mistakes. I could be wrong.......I normally am !

It must be like fighting a good counter puncher you have to weigh up the risk of whats coming back before committing to the punch.........so they get after Rooney and he turns them or plays through them and puts Vardy away.........will they keep committing to getting after him..... i guess thats the threat of having a speed merchant up front
NEWKID 29,095
That's why I don't get them putting Vardy on the last night, you can't press so high if your exposed behind, there was the ideal opportunity the last night to kill the game in that manner, but no we sit back and take our just rewards

I'm sure they will get around him mate, as well as Ali and Llana, but surely these lads are used to that, if Wales go pushing to hard they will get punished, it's a fine line. I think they should start Kane and Vardy, play them as an orthodox front 2 and get Vardy running off the shoulder, where he's best, Williams is a good defender IMO, but he'll be having nightmares about them 2

lanesra 4,007
As an aside, do you think that is possibly the last time you will see Rooney kick a ball for England?......now I have always been a fan of Rooney but he looked very uncomfortable. Not a chance unless he's injured , shows how people see games differently , I thought he looked good . He's a good solid centre back and a good leader that as played against your lads on a regular basis. Passion doesn't win games but ours will certainly help us on Thursday, be nice for us both to get a result and both progress though.

bracken boy 584
Wilf you a joke,, that england performance was a really good one, for you to say it wasn't good baffles me, Rooney played well, lalana played well the two fullbacks bombed on with menace in which walker was my man of match dyer did all the ugly things well and played well, defence looked better so I'm baffled, the result wasn't what they wanted but hey ho. WILF 51,082
Like I said, just my opinion and I thought it was nothing to write home about. For players that play in the so called best league in the world it should be better IMHO......but there you are, England fans tend to see us as better than we are. WILF 51,082
Simple question, given the leagues that the players play in......why is England not up there with the Germans or the Spanish in footballing terms ? Any excuse for that ?
ftm 3,357
leaving kane to take corners will be woys downfall -what a waste of height! sterling has no end product -rooney was class [in a different role] dier looked very comfortable as did walker
WILF 51,082
Because the foreigners playing in the Prem stifle English players chances. We also might have the most physical ' fast paced league in the world but technically maybe not. England have to play to their strengths And at the moment that is Attack attack attack. Everyone is playing to the same constraints mate, there are non native players in every league so that's no excuse!
