A Couple Of Hours With The Lamp

Recommended Posts

Well it was a nice warm evening so what better way to start the weekend than with a little walk around with the lamp.

Needed to wait until after the ten'o'clock news before it was dark enough to venture out. Made sure the S410 had enough air, loaded up the magazines and collected some spare batteries for the Ultrafire torch. First stop was a ten minute walk up the road to the allotments and decided to approach from the neighbouring grass field. Unfortunately there were sheep with lambs in here so I needed to make a detour round the edge of the field so as not to panic them. It was a very still night and every footstep had to be taken with care so as not to spook the rabbits. One or two were seen on the edge of the field but I just couldn't get close enough before they slipped into the hedge.

Then tried inside the actual allotments but after nearing breaking my neck on some bean poles I thought it better to try the surrounding fields. On walking out of the allotment I almost stepped on a rabbit that was in some thick undergrowth and it bolted under a shed.

Next stop was our own field and a few rabbits were out in the open, stalked up the nearest and an AA Express put it in the bag. Tried a few more that were in the field but they too much on edge and soon slipped away. So decided to slip through the hedge and try a big grass field I had never lamped before. Walking up towards a farm building I put the torch on and saw a rabbit just slipping under the gate. Down on the sticks and took the shot but unfortunately the pellet clipped the bottom of the gate.

From where I was I swung the torch round and spotted two pairs of rabbits out in the field fifty odd yards away. Torch off and moved myself so that I would be in range of all four. Lamp on and none of them had moved. Dropped the first one, reloaded and took the one next to it. Torch off, reloaded and then to my amazement when I put the torch back on the other two were still sat out to my left and a quick repeat put them both in the bag, four rabbits in barely a minute.

Picked these four up but could see others out in the field so left them in a pile and carried on. Next one was taken just before it entered the hedge then I spied two more back out in the field. Crept over and took the first one but the second one started to head off so tried to cut it off but a hurried shot resulted in a clear miss. Going back I couldn't remember where the first one was shot and with my dim red light I could not find it in the grass. So gave up on that one and went back to retrieve the four from earlier. Walking back towards the barn I saw two more back out in the field and went after these, the first one was an easy shot but the second one was very edgy and started to hurry across the field I half-heartedly went after it but with the weight of all seven rabbits in my backpack I let it go on its way for another day.

So not a bad couple of hours for a total of eight rabbits shot (seven retrieved). Two were old tough rabbits so they were left for the fox but the other five will be made into bunny burgers tomorrow.
