right I was keen to get into digging yrs ago but had no one to show me the ropes so to speak.

And didn't think it was a good idea.to go out by myself drop the dog in with literally no experience at all.only ever watched a few lads digging a few times.

In my eyes the dogs welfare is top priority.and I would hate to make a school boy error that could possibly cause a collapse etc.

I even went and bought a pup from the other side of the country.

But after about 14months I couldn't get the bitch working myself so rang the lad who I had the bitch off and he took her back.as she was bred and deserved to work.

But sadly I couldn't give the bitch the work she needed.

So did many of you start out on your own.

Or is a mentor the way to go.

Very much the same as you, I was taken out a few times so someone could blow his own trumpet to a young lad. Once I saw a terrier work I was amazed and fascinated in equal measure, I've never looked back.

I didn't have a mentor, they didn't want any competition or I just did their heads in with the thousands of questions I threw at them.

In a perfect world I'd say mentor, left to me no one would be able to work a terrier unless they'd served some time with a mentor or something along the lines the French have.

Luckily I was shown the correct way by my Oldman and uncle tommy(god bless him).when I started to meet others who were into it-I saw how not to go about it,finding someone trustworthy to show you and take you out regular isn't easy-lots come and go,go behind your back,bad mouth you,get jealous when your little worker shows up the experts dogs etc-it's a bitchy world the world of a terrierman king lol-some think it's thier god given right to dig and won't accept a nobody so to speak into the fold.I've met some right darlings over the years,some good genuine men but mostly folk you don't want to be associated with trust me-lots preach this and that and are just the opposite.probably the reason that working terriers to ground has all these restrictions placed upon it.we are bottom of the list when it comes to shooting etc and made out to drag feildsports into the gutter,there are good and bad in all feildsports same as all walks of life.I have always thought that some sort of licencing or test would stop the bad eggs,but i dont think it will happen in my lifetime-just have to accept it for what it is and follow the Law the best you can.atb dc

I'm still learning I still make mistakes although fewer than I have in the past , not ashamed to say I will try learn from anyone newbie or old timer . I prefer company when digging just enjoy the craic more .

King. I admire your respect for the welfare of the dog, but if I was you I would just get on with it! It is hard to "get in" with lads and some would let you think terrierwork is some sort of art for gifted people? Don't leave the fear of the unknown stop you. Get out there and do it, things will fall into place. Off course you need the proper tools (dogs) for the job and if you are lucky enough and acquire a good dog to start with then the dog will teach you more than any mentor will. You obviously have sense so once you don't put a dog into an obvious mineshaft, then put the dog in a hole, give it time to settle, turn on the locator and dig the dog out...... No matter how deep the hole is. You put it in so you dig it out. Simple as that......

Mentors (idols) can have a nasty habit of leaving you down or not living up to expectations! You might just be lucky to meet a good lad but I believe in making my own luck.

good post Corkman !! I've in the past took lads out with me that would've been better of without me in hindsight ?. As long as you use a bit of common sense and have the dogs best interests at heart you won't go far wrong .

Yea think u may be right Cork man.there are a few lads up the road from me that are into the terriers. But they ain't lads I want to bother with to be honest.they are more into propping the bar up so to speak.and pubs are something I don't do.

So the adds saying 2yr old 100% etc.give them a try and hit or miss.or get a pup from proven stock.and bring it on.

If you were starting out what route would you take mate.

Don't bother with somebody else's rubbish king, no good terrierman will ever sell a good working dog. It's hard enough getting a working dog in the first place.

Try and get to know some good folk and try to see parents working and then try to aquire a pup.

The big bit of advice I can give you is don't rush into it (speaking from experience) take your time when looking for a pup.

Don't fall into the trap of paying big bucks for crap.

Keep at it and don't give up.

Get a well bred pup and let it be a pup for 18 months or so, then bring someone onto your permission to give guidance when entering your pup.? assess the earth for suitability, take your time, make sure you dig is wide enough and dont panic. Atb

100% a pup mate, bond with it learn from it then fingers crossed when of age you'll be digging to it n I can promise you'll be buzzing that much you'll feel drunk! Take someone else's shite and it'll put you of for life!
