walshie 2,804
Here's my last townie question for this year. Our burner has the usual opening and closing vent under the grate - I worked that out myself. But on each side of the burner near the top, there is a sliding strip of metal that opens or closes a hole. As this is well above the coal or wood, I can't see what they do. They've both been closed since we moved in and everything works fine, but I just wondered what they were for. Socks - to save you typing. I know. Townie twat.

JDHUNTING 1,817
Keep them all open when lighting and close the bottom vent once its going all that air blowing in from the bottom will just burn your logs rapido amd send all the heat up the flue
walshie 2,804
Yeah, I use the bottom one to regulate the fire, but these ones on the side don't seem to do anything. Closed Open
JDHUNTING 1,817
If you shut the bottom one and open the top ones the embers will pile up at the bottom and stay hot if the airs passing through them they just burn out quickly and turn to ash in no time.

ryaldinhio 5,188
Coal burns best with air from underneath, wood with air passing over the top. If you are burning coal have these shut, if you are burning wood have the bottom ones shut and use these to regulate air.
