Multi-Fuel Burner

Here's my last townie question for this year. :yes:

 

Our burner has the usual opening and closing vent under the grate - I worked that out myself. But on each side of the burner near the top, there is a sliding strip of metal that opens or closes a hole. As this is well above the coal or wood, I can't see what they do.

 

They've both been closed since we moved in and everything works fine, but I just wondered what they were for.

the white stuff on sheep is called a fleece, wool is what its made into you f***ing country bumkin ha.
