gnasher16 31,602
Personally I don't think he'll ever be a top top player... He has the attributes to be a decent striker for a mid table team but he's certainly far from the finished article.. You can say it's a strikers business to score goals and little else, but for every shearer or Owen there are a million carbon copies of Whittington and Walcott waiting in the wings... Everybody wants to be a goal scorer, but not everyone can score goals, he has proved he can but what else does he have to his game to merit the title world class......few are , and to be banking on a front line of him and Kane possibly fothe summerr tis a bit naive imho I make you right a great striker today is a different thing to a great striker from years gone by you look at strikers like Rush or Lineker they were instinctive 6 yard box strikers you just dont seem to see those any more.....you look at a team like Arsenal and the amount of chances they create and think a typical goal poacher like Ian Wright would score 30 per season in that team yet they seem to place as much importance on a striker holding the ball up with his back to goal like Giroud does as being quick and deadly in the box.......its a statistic we could probably never know the answer to but id be interested to see the amount of goals Rush or Lineker scored from inside the 6 yard box in a season compared to Vardy or todays top scorer for the season im not sure if the game has changed or the players who play it have. THE STIFFMEISTER 17,526
It's a very different game mate, players such as molby would be bypassed today like a traffic island...even centre halfs of huge standing as nearby back as ADams would be deadwood on the long balls so feted by the likes of Torres etc to run onto.... My key example is Walcott, I do not rate him at all, not one iota, I think he is a classic "world class" England player , why? He is fast, but has he fulfilled his potential at all? IMHO we are still waiting but how long do we have to wait? Pace kills in the world of football, look at the best players, CR7 , messi, bale, Suarez, all lightning fast, But to get back on topic, vardy is a very very good player but he is the current darling, yes he has done well, and he scores all types, but world class players ? They do it season after season....he is as yet very unproven.. I'd like to see him travel and play, but start? Remember this is England, Rooney will be picked if he becomes a paraplegi
WILF 51,121
Your bang on the money my brother, a "great" forward has a lot to his game but you don't really know it until they are 29 You can't make that call on one good season. Great strikers are called Ronaldo (the original), Battistuta, Henry, Shearer.......is he that?.......dont think so

THE STIFFMEISTER 17,526
I think it was ranieria who said it best after his last goal... Bbc reporter : Claudio , have you ever had such a natural goal scorer as Jamie vardy in one of your teams? Ranieria : erm yes, when I was at florentina , we had this guy called Gabriel batistuta .... Get back in your box, for those who think football was born in euro 96, ranieria spoke for those who watch football week in week out... To touch on another subject, imho vardy will always remain a fringe player, predators like jermaine Defoe sat waming the bench whilst England struggled to fit lampard and Gerard into a system that suited the sun readers, all the while one of the greatest players that ever pulled on his boots was sat at home watching sopranos..... England will never make use of a natural goal scorer, we just don't have the system or players to support them

In a nutshell , yes, the average player is far more technical on the ball, yet less blessed with less vision etc than ever before, look at the rise of the African players as beloved by Arsenal, Newcastle , B rate and secondary standard , but hugely in demand for the ease of conditioning and maintain ends of fitness... Basically the premier league is turning into the nfl
ryaldinhio 5,188
I cant believe a thread on vardy is bringing up names like shearer, henry, ronaldo, batistuta, suarez?! Really???? ffs. He is a mirror image of craig belamy. defenders struggle with him because he is quick, can hit a shot. He isnt good when you watch him, he is just getting the rub of the green at the minute. AND leicester are playing counter attacking football which suits him. class is permenant form is temporary. when he has hit 200 prem goals then we can talk of shearer, henry and the rest. I do agree though that currently he should be upfront for england because I believe the national team should be picked on form. World class??? NEVER.
