Lamp Shy

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I went out last night with the Tracer 150 LED (took the red filter too).

My first time laming and my first time using a lamp. I have heard the expression 'lamp shy' before but I'm not sure if if these rabbits are lamp shy or not. When shining the red light on them they just seem to stay calm and look back at it but as soon as I use the lamp without the filter the vast majority scarper and we are usually left with one or two in the field (they were the ones sat in the middle of the field).

Sorry if this sounds stupid to any of you but is it normal most of the rabbits to run away as soon as the light is shining?

It depends on the weather A lot mate if it's blowing a nice wind with a lot of cloud cover and drizzle you can usually get pretty close to them with either beam but if you wait for the perfect nights you'll be out once a month if ya lucky , it also depends if a lot of other people are lamping the area which they probably are, if a rabbit has been run before they usually start making they're way to safety when you shine that light back on them again, why don't you try and get the dog used to the red beam then pal, it's all about learning for you aswel as the dog, the more your out the more experienced you'll both get

Try get between the rabbit n where they want to be

I agree with the above.

If most of them are bolting when you use a normal lamp then they definitely have seen it before!

Rabbits can't really see the red light, not sure if it's at all or just struggle to see it generally but if I can get close enough I generally just use the red light when I'm pulling the trigger. Depends how strong your lamp is as I know when you use a filter can seriously reduce intensity of beam.

If you get somewhere that ain't been lamped then I would use red but then white to stun em then take shot.

Like already been said though, everyday is a school day.

Good luck pal

It was abit of a crap night for it tbh, no wind and abit moony, i went to a place about 1/2 mile from a motorway for the drone of traffic to try and dull the sound of me and the dog walking through millions of dead leafs, it seemed a good idea at the time, i came home empty handed, welcome to the club lol.
