pappabear 128
Hi all , the last few days my aviary has been visited by a sparrowhawk flying at the wire feet first , I think it's a young bird as even when I was stood there it came down close enough to hit my shoulder with its wing . Can anyone tell me if there is anything I can do to deter it . Thanks in advance
fireman 11,239
Double wire it or some pea netting or fishing line stretched over the front or the good old reliable ,22 ,i sometimes get a visit when it's been raining for a good few days and i have scaffolding netting that i pull down over half the front of the flights,if it persists, old reliable

dogger 100
old cds dangling on strings round about your aviary as they blow in the wind it will deter hawks as used on my local shoot round about the pens
stealthy1 3,964
It will get bored crashing into the mesh. And it keeps your birds fit
fireman 11,239
It will get bored crashing into the mesh. And it keeps your birds fit Unless they get their foot through and try to pull your birds through like they have mine or there'll spook the birds so much they fly and kill themselves on the wire like my old goldie cock did last year ,but got them sussed now and they don't return ..
slip lead 862
Plastic sheeting does the job, it's best to try something or you might loose birds through shock or pulled through wire, I get young sparrow hawks every year.

pappabear 128
Thanks guys , will give the cds a go , at the moment all the birds are choosing to stay in the shed part and not coming into the flight
gnasher16 31,007
Had my first one in a while the other day.....i tried all that cd lark, the bird scarer things none of them really worked...... i just begrudge limiting my view of the birds with netting/double wire and whatever else but prevention is better than cure i suppose. fireman 11,239
I know a fella who put fishing wire across the front of his flights,he's put it at 6 inch intervals and about 4 inches off the wire front of his flights and once the hawks hit it once they don't bother trying again and you can't really see the fishing line so it don't look rubbish sort of thing and it has saved his birds but again i only get a visit after a few days of heavy rain but not seen one for a good while now but i don't miss the visits at all ..
