BGD 6,437
Men who stood up and fought for their country and freedom when a foreign power tried to take them over. Cowards according to the Brits who sit by and watch as their country is "taken over by Muslims" You couldn't make it up. Honestly the troubles are over, I don't even understand why it was brought up? It was a shit time with awful crimes committed by both sides, like all war no one came out of it smelling of roses but I think the N.I peace process will be looked on as one of the greatest diplomatic deals of our time. Time to move on I think But it hasn't stopped though, the RIRA still carry on like its business as usual........ Street thugs that latched onto the branding and image of the 'RA, dealing drugs and extorting money from the local populace is hardly "carrying on like business as usual". Business as usual would be bombings on the mainland, assasinations of soldiers, attacks on the garda etc etc... you know, general war like stuff. Maybe you just don't remember what the troubles were really like? You can't do if you're trying to say that it's still "business as usual" As I said it still goes on, maybe not as hardcore as the 70's & 80's but with a the continuing endless wars in the Middle East these days nothin makes national news anymore. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Real_Irish_Republican_Army_actions Bad as that is (and even worse how little media coverage it gets, the bombers are the wrong colour for the narrative I guess ) it's hardly on the scale of the all out war of the troubles is it? More like a few barm pots that didn't get the message that it's over
WILF 49,701
I have pals who served in NI, they did it with one hand tied behind their back as have our soldiers in almost every modern conflict of the last 20 odd years. The original thread was about Heroshima, and it's my opinion that it was a black day for humanity for scientist to put such power into the hands of governments. The same governments that will happily let ordinary soldiers die trying to fight to a set of "rules" and yet they feel no compunction about having a weapon that will incinerate hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in the blink of an eye and poison the place it's used for millennia !! With regards to ireland, I get the impression that folk are sick and tired of the gunmen.......life's hard enough. In the words of Jose Wales: Dieing isn't so hard, it's living that's hard. I reckon that character is right.

Couldn't agree more As I've said on here in the past the men in my family proudly served in the IRA but you speak to my Granda now and he says while he'd love to see a united Ireland in his life time he doesn't think it'd be worth the bloodshed and heartache it'd take to get there. You started it calling I.R.A. COWARDS.......go home to Scotland,,,,,,,you are in a foreign country......... In all fairness mate, I would say the vast majority of people in England can't understand what any of it was about at all !! We could not tell my wifes granny when she converted, not because old granny was a raving Orangeman, just because it wasn't the done thing to become a catholic........see in England, no one would have any understanding of that at all ! They just could not fathom how a white person from one area couldn't drive into another predominantly white area.......no concept at all. So to be fair to the majority of Englishmen, it's not that they didn't care about Ireland it was just the whole situation meant nothing to them at all......wouldn't even cross their mind. There's plenty of English today who dont even realise we are seperate countries......to us, you have always just been part of these isles. Another thing that I certainly didn't think about (and I doubt many Englush do) is just how young this country is in it's present form....not even a 100 years old, it's not until you realise that, that it becomes apparent why it's seems to simmer for some folk.......see, your ordinary common or garden Englishman just wouldn't even think about it. From what I can see, the only ones that cared about it were the ones that cared about it.......everyone else was just trying to work round them. Mate its my opinion, that's all, I don't mean to be rude, but Britain is the mainland, n.Ireland as you say is in the UK, not Britain. An that's what I think is still causing division, people calling n.I British when it's clearly not, you only have to look at your passport. I don't want to argue mate so I'll leave it at that.
