You breed to succeed, you breed with the expectation of all and if a pup falls short then that is simply unfortunate, for whatever reason, not that you were unlucky and then you re-evaluate for next time. No luck involved, only logic... without going into detail and splitting hairs about what is the difference between unlucky and as you said unfortunate ( basically they mean the same thing mate). Any man that breeds of course breed for success but the reality of breeding is that they all don't make the grade. And any man that does breed litters with a 100% success rate is a lucky man ... or sorry fortunate man ?Ha, your right MM, as soon as i posted that i knew i should of used another word but couldn't find one and still cant but i know i'd only ever breed a litter knowing i'd done the best i could using knowlage and logic than luck, no matter how the litter panned out. Same as buying in, you've just picked your pup up and parted with your money and/or trust and the breeder blurts out that he hopes he has more luck with this litter...! Not exactly a vote of confidence is it! Anyway's back to subject, out of a litter, i like to go for Mr or Miss average pup, the one that sits back a little, unafraid but taking it/you all in and failing that then out if a good litter a quieter one. Some over bold pups i've seen have turned out a bit 'gassy' but thats just my opinion and personal choice. Quote Link to post

Squirrel_Basher 17,102 Posted August 3, 2015 Report Share Posted August 3, 2015 Lets put a bit of perspective on it lads .No-one is saying they can breed litter after litter of every pup working but to rely on luck is very haphazard ,I would EXPECT some not to make digging dogs not be surprised when they work and i think this is where the confusion lies .75 % of a litter working is what to consistently aim for and youve made it .Of course i cull probably sometimes for reasons other than work too which would be beyond some lads.Every year i hear of lads looking for studs to put over bitches that have produced good workers and im a loss as why they wont go back to the same dog again then bingo you on the road to a line .Scatter breeding should be illegal as it goes no-where .Some matings will produce 100 % working litters but not the norm .Breed for success not be feel lucky when the odd one grafts .If any of you know lads that have a line ,ask them what they look for in a bitch as well as work .Anwsers from honest lads wont differ too much i know . 1 Quote Link to post

Even though you've bred a high percentage of workers that your happy with there's still one that's gonna get lumbered. That's all I was trying to get across mate . ?
