stealthy1 3,964 Posted August 1, 2015 Report Share Posted August 1, 2015 Well, it's that time of year again, the crops are being harvested, and the fields are teaming with thousands of baby crop munchers. The carnivores with take their fill to feed their young. So yesterday saw me out on a recky on the hedge lines taking note of where the rabbits are for later in the season when the f****n stinging nettles die off. My wakling partner today was the now legendery HW100KT. After a bit of walk, I was ready for sit down. I'd noticed while on the dirt track doing a motorised recky, that there were a couple of rats feeding on the shit heep where the animal dung from the fattening calfs that were held during winter, in the winter barns is dumped. It's amazing how may amimals use these places. Just checking the the foot prints in the mud shows how diverse the animals are that visit the heep. Noisy grass hoppers were giving their legs some grate in the long grass, where I chose to lurk. Had a couple of Sexton Beatles drop out of the sky and land on the back of my hand, think I'd sat in one spot to long Anyway, while having a sit down a myriad of pests turned up at the site. Wood Pigeons seemed to love it, maybe it was the seeds left in the bedding straw that was what the attraction. Rabbits too put in a visit, not sure of their intentions, but I don't think it was food, young doe's seemed to be the item of choice I managed to knock off one of the orgy goers, but that was it, they stayed away after that, but being whacked by a HW100 in the head can have that effect. Not one rat showed up, which was the main reason I pitched up there. So decided to whack a couple of doo's, one feral landed in the brown water that builds up on these sites, so it stayed there, I didn't need it that badly So after a couple of hours I'd had enough, so I took the THL pic and packed up. It's worth a sit out on these places if you have one on your perms, and only have a couple of hours to spare, and you'll be surprised what turns up, thought I saw a Pied Flycatcher picking up insects, but only caught a flash of the bird, and can't be sure, so go on lads give it a go, you never know. It's 31 meters to the middle, and 35 to the end of the heep on the right, and 37 on the left, and 51 to the bushes on the right. If you have one on your perms, take a look, you won't believe what turns up to feed on the insects that live in dung, but always wind over your back though. Quote Link to post

mark williams 7,568 Posted August 2, 2015 Report Share Posted August 2, 2015 (edited) A couple of dead corvid decoys on cradles wouldn`t half spice things up a bit, especially with some intestines and carcasses about them. Corvids also seem to "reassure" other wildlife that the coast is clear, i always use them. Freeze the rabbit skin/ head and guts mate - fantastic attractant for corvid shooting !
