oneredtrim 148
Since that list was printed they've been watching more footy... In the last world cup, when they drew 2 - 2 with Portugal, they did it with 25m viewers on two channels. The MLS averages around 20,000 fans a game, 4000 more than the English Div 1. It's popularity has overtaken hockey and basketball. It ain't the premier league but it's entertaining enough... Especially when you consider that these guys don't earn in a year, what the average PL player earns in a week. Personally I don't think I'll see England, or the USA, win a world cup in my lifetime. ChrisJones 7,975
Little acorns Christopher https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBdY-C2Gk18 I watch the MLS every week, because I'm too tight to pay Rupert Murdoch for the Premier League! I like it. It's like watching Div 1 in the 80's. I still don't think they'll evolve far enough in my lifetime. Not against the countries that take the sport far more seriously. They have a cohesive team. Something England has lacked for years, but at that level simple team spirit isn't going to cut it on it's own. They want to be global players but seriously... watch a couple of MLS games and you'll see the differing standards. Little acorns indeed but can you grow a solid oak before I drop dead? oneredtrim 148
The head of the Aussie FA shed some light on how the process works. He said that FIFA's guidelines for bidders state that the bidders must demonstrate their commitment to the international development of the game. They are advised to appoint consultants to facilitate this process. The Aussies' consultants advised them to make various payments, such as paying travel costs for U17 teams to attend a tournament, grants to develop playing facilities etc which all seemed to be perfectly legitimate. They were also advised to make contributions to various disaster relief funds, where the link to football was indirect. The Aussies did not query this process since it what was exactly the same as they'd encountered when bidding for the 2000 Olympics. Finally they were asked to pay $4m for a training academy in the Caribbean. They baulked at this but agreed to pay $500k towards a feasibility study. The payment was made to Conacaf, the feasibility study never took place, the Aussies want their money back.If they try to strip Russia and/or Qatar of the WC, they'll undoubtedly use the Aussie defence. All of the payments they made were legitimate, made in good faith. The corruption was on the part of the recipients. All of the other bidders were making similar payments because that's how FIFA's process worked.
oneredtrim 148
Blatter is from the same stable as Samaranch. Both were selected by the German adidas company, owned by the Dassler family, in the 1970s as preferred candidates for the highest posts in world sport. It was never a coincidence that the marketing company ISL, also owned by the Dasslers, acquired the exclusive contracts to make millions out of the rights to the World Cup and the Olympics
