Keeping Bees On Your Allotment

Recommended Posts

Not got an allotment so I don't know the rules. Nor do I keep bees. Although I collect my fair share.

In a secluded corner if allowed I wouldn't see any problem. More than likely welcomed by fellow growers I would have thought.

Do you come across many swarms?

I'm chasing throughout the season.

Ive been granted permission on the allotments to keep a Top-bar hive  (god i hate grovelling to em.. bloody hitlers  ) anyhow there is one persistent pyromaniac who cant go on his plot without lighting some sort of feckin fire ...will this affect the hive if smoke occasionally blows across my plot ?.

There shouldn't be any problem with the odd bit of smoke, worse that will happen is some of the bees will go and fill themselves with honey thinking there's a forest fire. After all bee keepers use smoke to calm the bees when inspecting the hive with no issues.

Have the allotment committee only allowed you to keep a top bar hive and said no to a more conventional hive or is this your choice?

I suppose with a topbar you can pretty much leave it to work away, with little human intervention, I think they are more difficult to harvest honey and increase your number of hives when you get bitten by the bee keeeping bug though. Its great to get a start in beekeeping, no matter what hive you keep them in, best of luck.

Go visit your local beekeeping association - hopefully it won't be full of little hitlers but will be full of people giving good advice freely. If anything like our local association there will be an apiary where you can get some hands on experience - you may change your mind about a TBH.

Good luck with your venture anyway.

most council allotments are run under the same set of rules these are the alotment garden rules. check your area

theres rules state athat on an allotment you can keep all animals except cloven hoof

so bees, rabbits, ducks and chickens are usually a given

as for the type of hive well thats up to you, i am personally a classicly trained bee keeper so i use nationals and dadants, with the ability to do breeding and there fore swarm controls i have three at the allotments durring the winter and summer but can increase to 30 nucs when i am doing queen fertilisations and splitting nucs up, but there would only be there for five days and are so small it makes veryy little difference.

it does how ever make a difference to crops, as the people at the allotments i use all do seed saving in vast quantites they are happy as they get a better crop from me

i dont have swarms because of the bee controls i use so thats not an issue and i also have a 7 foot wire mesh fence to keep them up in the air
