The kennel club registers pedigree dogs, they do not ruin breeds. It's like saying the dvla ruined the Subaru Impreza when the shape of the car was changed.

Jessdale you are correct in that the breed clubs set the standard, and that the standard is exactly the same for working and show dogs. However, it is a judge of any breed, that is appointed by the KC for KC shows I believe, that dictates how the dog looks. Their likes and dislikes are bred for, cos if the judge does not like the way your dog looks there are no rosettes for you.

TC

The judge goes over the dog with the breed standard in mind. If the standard says 20" tall a dog at 25" tall ain't going to win. The breed clubs write the standard.

Thats so naive,a KC endorsed judge will judge to his or her preference, that preference will often be at odds with the breed standard set down by the KC,so over time the breed standard alters slightly to meet the new model, thus the original working type that stood the test of time is altered to suit the show ring and not the field, many judges are at odds with the KC standard, fact, they then judge accordingly."Fit for purpose" is something the KC is strong on advocating in their breed standards, many of their pedigree pooches are far from that, because of the standard model set down by the KC heirarchy, again fact. You only have to look at the health problems that beset many, many, many pedigree mutts that are bred to suit the KC standard, which then makes the KC directly responsible,to see where the problem lies, ribbons, dollar and ignorance.

Breed standards and kc aside,if the dog aint worked its the owners fault and no one elses .If a dog becomes too valuable to work it is a mere shadow of its ancestry .No reason whatsoever why conformation cannot go hand in hand with work .To value a dog for its looks only is what ruined the Dinmont .Work has its own conformation .

This is off the Kennel club page,

The basis of breed shows is the judging of pedigree dogs against the 'Breed Standard', which is a picture in words that describes each breed of pedigree dog. For all licensed breed shows, the Kennel Club Breed Standards must be used for the judging of pedigree dogs.

The Breed Standards are owned by the Kennel Club, and all changes are subject to approval by the Kennel Club General Committee.

Showing an not working is [BANNED TEXT] ruins lines of dogs and the kennel club in uk doesnt promote any terrier work, unlike the danish an continental kennel clubs.i think the nearest youd get to a working dandie would be a teckel an i think teckels had some dandie in them way back at the start of thier breed

breed standards are set by the breed clubs. these standards are open to interpretation. by the breeder. most breeders have a vested interest in certain lines within the breed . its common practice in these circles to pick and choose what judge you show your tyke under as you will have a better chance under some judges than others due to what linage your dog has.. these opinions often go as far back as the creation of the breed.

this is happening as we write with the plummer terrier. some favour the pure some favour the bull outcross. and will breed for these points its happened with the russell even though its unregistered it happens with the parson russell (KC} some dont like the fell / laky lines within the breed. this effects the judges and the way they judge. as they judge the breeding as well as the cosmetic side of the animal. breeders in turn follow suit . this is when it all goes tits up and they put a dog over a bitch to suite what they consider will give them the best chance of the all important CC. the way i see it as soon as the breeder puts a dog over a bitch with any other thought than working ability they have strayed from the path. and have crossed a line from work to show. and should hold there hand up as the person that breeds the dog over the bitch is 100 percent where the buck stops. the rest is just mud in the water
